My friend brought this up today. What he has done for the past two summers has gained him a rather large net product. He goes to estate/garage sales, buys $50 worth of stuff, and somehow sells it for 100-200% profit on Craigslist. He flips board games, books, silverware/china, and various other trinkets and collectibles.
Is this possible? It seems too good to be true, so I wanted to get your opinions on it. What items would you think are best for this kind of profit-making? In other words, I want money. This seems like a relatively hassle-free (if you get lucky with the items you sell) way to make some cash.
Here’s an interesting Honda Civic I saw yesterday. Wonderful times we live in, eh?

I do it quite a bit honestly. I also do some extreme couponing.. I got a Toshiba laptop at Staples last month for like $75 after couponing.. Flipped for $225 a week later. Also did it with a tablet and made $100...
Even a few toys from goodwill. Got 3 SF Giants bobble heads for $15 and sold for $100. It’s possible

I flip paintball gear a lot. It isn’t easy but if you know what you’re doing you can make a decent buck. It’s a sport where some old stuff is still worth money and parents have boxes of it from their now adult kids sitting in a basement and they want rid of it.

A buddy of mine does this with cars. He finds something on CL that just needs a little bit of work, does the repairs, and then sells it for a $1k-$2k profit. His most recent project was a ‘95 Integra that wouldn’t run. He bought it for $500. Replaced the alternator, battery, and spark plugs, and did an oil change. Sold it a month after he bought it for $2500. So after parts, he made around $1500 profit. I’ve been contemplating doing that myself, but my apartment complex doesn’t allow non-running cars or car repairs in the parking lot. Thankfully we’re getting out of there in September, so I can revisit that side business then.

What do you have? For every 1 old gun that is still worth $100+ there is 20 only worth $20

Based on just my experience you’d have to go to up to 10 garage sales to find something useful. Usually it’s junk (even goodwill would trash if they donated it).
Then there’s the whole Craigslist experience. List something for $50, and get bombarded with offers for $10, or people pleading there situation that want it for free. The only good experiences I’ve had with Craigslist is listing items for free.

On a much smaller scale, yeah, lol. You won’t see any TVRs or Skylines or Triumphs, and he won’t be working with the same budget or level of work. But the same idea.

My mom does this, she also checks the free section of craigslist and picks up random pieces of furniture that she then sells at garage sales for profit.
I don't have the energy personally.

You got me inspired to see what else I could flip. I went over to my parents and found a binder of Magic the gathering cards an old neighbor gave me years ago when he moved.
Well most of them are worthless but there is a set of 10 cards that regularly sell for between $1250-1500 on eBay.
Thank you sir, I'll be sure to raise my beer to you tonight!

I know a guy who did this with cars his junior and senior years in highschool, and he was pretty good at getting a profit out of them.
