Brought to you from the files of 505’s constant !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of the local parking bureau. Okay, I was wondering when they chicken scratched on this sign (due to be changed) that there would be a change in the “street cleaning” ban in my favorite sneak street to park. Okay, it used to be pretty easy, every Sunday night before 11pm you had to move your car. When 7am Monday rolls around you can park there again. Now it is 12:01am Wednesday till 7am Wednesday. So how many people want to bet that there is a study that says that people equate 12.01am Wed into actually THURSDAY morning a percentage of the time. To further compound the issue it is now only a ban on the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month. Now I don’t know about you, but this has me reaching for the calendar to double check - because I don’t want to wake up to a missing car in the morning and going to the impound. But knowing how vacant most people are when they park a car, I can only imagine this is a play for more ticket and tow revenue. What say you Oppo?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And so I checked last night during the ban - street was parked front to back.

How is that sign any kinds of legal/enforceable? It looks like it got vandalized.

I don’t know, most of the rest of the town just changed and they are out screwing up new ones. I didn’t see any tickets last night but I guess alot of people were willing to take that chance

I almost want to say get fined and then humiliate their stupid asses in court. They can’t honestly expect people to obey a sign where you almost expect an “LOL” at the end of it.

12:01 am is used instead of 12:00 am since most people don’t know that 12:00 am is really midnight. Lawyers have successfully argued that 12:00 pm could mean midnight because “pm” means night. To me, 12:01 am is completely unambiguous. However, the bigger issue is why we aren’t using a 24-hour clock like the rest of the civilized world.

Well shit, if you can just Sharpie a road sign and call it legal, make your own! VEHICLES WILL BE TOWED.

Seems pretty clear to me...shrug

Sharpie sign is pretty awesome though. Reminds me of when I was in Charleston and they’d put out temp no parking signs for cleaning and people would move them all over the place (both people who didn’t want to be towed and thought by moving the sign they were legit and by people who wanted to clear off some other street so they could park there during the cleaning restriction). It was hilarious chaos a couple times a year.

Because a 24 hour analog clock face has less visual precision and is obnoxious to read. We like ‘real life appropriate’ precision with are archaic units hence Fahrenheit. At least that’s what I’m going with.

If your analog chronograph reads 0800/2000, and you have been up all day, it’s pretty clear which one it is. If somebody tells you to meet them at 8:00, you can legitimately question which 8:00 they mean. 12-hour timekeeping is dumb. Our day is 24 hours long.

Nah, the double numbered ones are ugly and busy :P

Frankly, it’s no more dumb (weird phrasing, but I’ll go with it) than having a 24 hour day instead of decimal time.

Decimal time?

Dividing the day into units of 10 instead of 24. Chinese used to do it and the French tried to implement it when they were doing the whole forced metric thing. Didn’t stick.
