Really caught me off guard how vicious some of the reactions were in the comments. I’m not a huge fan, and sure Bono is (at least portrayed as) kind of a douche, but they’re just an inoffensive mainstream musical act. What is it about the internet that drives people so crazy?

It’s bad enough having to take the subway with millions of other people
without
having to hear their bullshit.

I think it was the whole Songs of Innocence dealio that has made the internet hate them. Before that most people wouldn’t even bother to comment.

It’s not like you can’t ignore them, like with every other obnoxious subway person. I don’t know, maybe that’s just the mild midwesterner in me talking. Regardless, I don’t really care enough about U2 to form a particularly strong opinion on this.
I’d just pull out my iPod and drown them out with my own tunes:

I think it’s the mild inoffensiveness to offensiveness that makes it possible for people to get that wound up. If there’s nothing *there*, it’s easier to make a bogeyman of whatever you project. I can (sadly) see people more worked up about U2 than anything from a Nirvana cover band to GWAR.
(For me, U2 run the gamut from very listenable to eh to nothx. They’ve done some interesting things artistically, some awful things artistically, and Bono is somebody who comes off as a douche but has done some very significant things. Nothing worth flipping one’s shit over.)

Makes sense. Still doesn’t seem like something worth getting so worked up about.

I 100% agree with everything you just said.

It lets people feel a sense of superiority. U2 is a band that had some good songs and some bad songs and Bono is kind of a douche but it’s not like they are some god damned skinhead metal band.

Pfft. Are you new to the internet? A picture of a dress can get everyone worked up!

Not new, but perhaps still naïve.

When South Park calls you a turd, you’re a bona fide douche.

That is a pretty good episode.

It’s more Ballaban’s wording, or Trolling.
Sadly he does have it days that the Troll Force is strong. I was once BallaBANNED myself.
P.S. just don’t call him a Master Baiter!

Personally its because Bono rants (while often getting paid to do so on behalf of an organisation) on and on about people needing to give money (who are often scraping by from paycheck to paycheck) to save the world but moves his tax domain to mainland Europe from the Republic of Ireland so he doesn’t have to pay the higher tax in his own country.

Songs of Innocence kind of offended me. I didn’t listen to them for a whole two weeks after that little fiasco, and then only listened to 80’s U2. Still I don’t hate them like I hate Hansen or Maria Carrey.

Still nursing the Hansen rage after 20 years?

Well, chances are that Apple
forced you to take the new U2 album
as well, sooo.....

Skinheads at least generally do what they say they’re going to do. Bono’s just a tax-dodging prick who tried to get governments to give more aid.

He may be all of the things you say, at best he is a huge hypocrite, but that is still better than being a violent racist. I don’t think it’s even close.

Yea, not sure I get it either. And I haven’t even deleted their album from iTunes when I got it free! I mean, i’ve had a few songs come up on random and they aren’t bad.
