A semi-local to me car enthusiast was murdered recently while trying to sell his car on Craigslist. I just want to remind you guys that there are bad people out there, and I’ve done one sketchy deal on Craigslist.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Thinking back at it, it could have gone a different way, were I wouldn’t be here anymore. Deal at a police department, or bring a glock. I really don’t care what you do to be safe, just do something. I realise we’re all car enthusiast and we all buy (or want to buy) cars and other things, and it’s just a terrible way to go. Just wanted to give you guys something to think about the next time you buy something in-person.

I’ve gotten into the police department craigslist meetup routine.

It’s super convenient for me since the police station is a half mile from my house.

I don’t have to worry about sketchy characters trying to pull something in a police department parking lot.

Buyers have given me positive feedback that meeting at the police station makes them feel better too.

Police departments all over are encouraging people to meet at police stations for craigslist transactions, and while it’s disappointing that’s what you need to do in this day and age, it is 100% the best way to go.

I disagree with the “or bring a glock” part of this. Meeting at a police station is a way to prevent a bad situation from happening in the first place.

Meeting somewhere else but bringing a gun is a way to open yourself up to potential bad situations and cause more problems if/when the gun comes out.

If we’re talking about a responsible and licensed gun owner, I would advise that they complete the transaction at the police station and bring the Glock!

Do we know he was actually going to meet someone through craigslist and this wasn’t unrelated? Maybe selling the car was just a coincidence and he was there for some other reason?

the problem with bring your glock...

too often that gun is actually leads to the death of the innocent person. Two armed people in a stand off the law adviser probably has the worse position when he decided to respond and that sudden response is what can be fatal. The point is to avoid that stand off at all costs (whether you carry or not).

Car was stolen, body recovered seprately. His car was most likely the target. Sad someone could kill for so little.

I read this morning that his body was found fairly close to his car?

The body was found a few hundred feet away, so not really separate.

Look, I’m a gun-hating liberal and actively dislike the private ownership of firearms in this country. I’d be super happy if every “responsible and licensed gun owner” had their license and firearms taken from them, the paper the licenses were printed on recycled into environmentally-friendly pizza boxes, and the guns melted down to scrap to make water filtration equipment for poor countries.

But let’s not make this a political discussion about guns.

As a purely practical matter, if you’re going to carry a gun with you to a police station, that creates a whole lot more red tape in the situation than if you just show up with a set of tires. You have to go inside, talk to the cops, say what you’re up to and that you have a gun, ask them for instructions, and follow those instructions exactly.

Doesn’t seem to be worth that extra hassle when really, being at the police station, in and of itself, is enough security.

If you’re in a state where you are licensed to carry a concealed weapon, you’re not obligated to tell the police anything nor would you need to because you’re not going to brandish your weapon unless your life is in danger right? Right. So on the outside chance that the person who wants to buy my car is actually a psycho that wants to shoot or stab me in broad daylight at a police station, then I don’t have to wait for the police to see what is going on/react.

Whether you’re legally required to tell the police anything is beside the point. Let’s just think about this logically.

If you’re in the parking lot of a police station and you pull a gun, the police inside will see this, and go into “guy with a gun in the parking lot of our police station” response mode. It is likely that this will end badly for the legal concealed carry person, even though they are legally carrying that weapon.

In order for the legal concealed carrier to avoid bad things happening to them in the event that a hypothetical psycho with a hypothetical weapon hypothetically does something crazy, it’s a good idea to tell the cops ahead of time, “oh hey btw I’m selling some tires to someone from craigslist in your parking lot, I have a legal concealed weapon, please don’t shoot me if this goes sideways.”

See what I mean?

I’m really trying to not have a political argument. It’s just going to aggravate both of us.

Instead, let’s think happy thoughts about Chick-fil-A breakfast.

Did you know they have a secret menu item where you can get a spicy chicken, egg & cheese biscuit? It’s amazing.

I understand what you said but I don’t “see what you mean” and you’re not “picking up what I’m putting down” either. You keep saying you’re not trying to make this a political argument, but you’re the only one mentioning politics.

On a political note, I don’t eat Chick-fil-A because the clan of bible thumping clowns that own that establishment, insist that it be closed on Sundays. Sunday just happens to be the only day where I get a craving for Chick-fil-A.

We still have cars, which is where this all started anyway...

I haven't read a news report yet, I just know what his friends are sharing to our car group. I'll look more into it.

Thought I was the only one that craved it on Sundays. Hurts my soul that it’s closed. Even the ones in mall food courts are closed on Sundays.
