Why are illegally imported vehicles even a concern? Isn’t there a million other things we could spend our tax dollars on and are a much better use of law enforcement’s time than this?

The long arm of the law gets to be flex; the citizens get to be scared. End of story.

Something I always wanted to know: if I brought my UK registered/taxed/insured/GB marked Defender over to the US of A for a road trip holiday, for 30 days, would it be subject to the same laws?

No, Tourists are allowed to bring their cars over for a period no longer than 1 year.

Not even... It’s never been a problem in the US until Mercedes America lobbied so that american stopped buying their cars for cheaper straight out of Germany, cutting off the “poor middle man”.

Unfortunatly, with the power of lobbying in the states, combined with the love Reagan had for huge companies, Reagan enacted the ban on grey imports, pretexting “security issues”, while putting off work a crap load of small import companies.

What lives are being saved here. Fair enough rules are rules but the justification he puts forth makes no damn sense.

I love how he has to justify to himself that they are doing something reasonable that “saves lives”. What you’re doing is destroying a perfectly good automobile for no reason, “we can’t offer it for re export”, why the fuck not? Oh because some stupid rule in a mound of paperwork says that it’s easier to destroy than resell. God I wish I didn’t watch this I wish I could tell this guy that he didn’t save anyone and his job is a joke!

Le sigh.

Should just reject it and send it back to where it came from under the importers name. Collections agencies can go after that person for the costs.

I can certainly understand the safety concerns or the issues with VIN swapping/manipulating, but it’s not a crushworthy offense. Down under, hooning isn’t really a crushworthy offense either, but I can understand their reasoning and how a message does need to be sent. I’m just not sure it’s the correct message.

Then just take it to a drive to Canada or Mexico when that 1 year deadline approaches, get a permission for one more year and repeat?

It was such a dick move by Mercedes. Because of them pushing for the ban so we couldn’t buy their cars for cheaper they went and took away the opportunity to buy cars that we don’t get in the states normally. The foreign branches could have just refused to sell the cars to Americans. I also feel like the government is missing a huge opportunity to collect even more taxes from people bringing cars over, but then again the government isn’t too bright and cant see the bigger picture.
