So could I legally import a B5 A4 with the 1.9 TDI engine? The B5 is on the list of exemptions, but would the engine pass also?

That’s the problem. The list is only for cars that have been approved by the NHTSA, which basically just deals with crash safety and design conformity, but not emissions. There doesn’t seem to be any federal office that consolidates information for both agencies.

However, I would like to offer my services to be director of such an office. Let’s call it the Motor Vehicle Standards Information Service or something. I will need $165,000 a year to start, an expense account, and an office somewhere in a nice part of DC, sooo, Alexandria VA.

That poor Skyline has now come to the end of it’s life. That sucks so bad! Why are people so stupid?!?! Thanks Mercedes-Benz for screwing over EVERYONE because you couldn’t sell a damn car that competed with the 745i Turbo.

EDIT: Now, what about bringing a car over in multiple pieces in the same crate? I’ve heard a rumor that this type of action can make a car register-able under “kit car” status. True or false?

Fuck emissions! Well because TDI I guess, so don’t fuck them. Just don’t keep track of them.

Also, put it in DC in some fancy office building with a man at the front desk that only can say a limited amount of words in English. I'm also glad to never have to go to Alexandria. Ever. Never ever ever.

Eh, I’m not really a fan of DC. Way, way too much ass kissing to get a concealed carry permit.

Although, as a federal official, maybe shortcuts?

I'm not a huge fan of the area as a whole, haha. Almost moved out to Front Royal because of how sick of this shit I was.

I know, I have cousins in Fairfax that have been scheming for years to find a way out. In the meantime, they keep getting more and more tied down, so I’m betting on it not happening, no matter how much they complain.

That’s why I’m trying to avoid settling down with someone in the area. I’ve got some loose ends to tie up, and then I’m out of here.

Yep, that’s the key. Get deeply into a career, marry someone who’s also into hers, have kids, buy a house, and before you know it, you’re completely stuck in the spot at least until retirement.

I didn’t want to get stuck in upstate New York*, so I avoided all that and was able to get the hell out when the time came.

*Lots of beautiful scenery and at least a few nice towns, but mostly economically decimated and depressing. Saratoga is cool though.

Haha, I've spent some time in Upstate. Great scenery as you said, but for the most part, sorta tired out feeling.

You get no compensation. At all.

You can’t do it in the same crate. You can do it in multiple crates. And it’s still illegal.

It’s not exempt. It’s eligible. You still need to bring it through a RI to conform it, and a ICI to meet EPA standards. It’s doable. You will spend about ~$50,000 in addition to the cost of the car. Yeah, I know. Sorry.

His price is WAY out to lunch. A MINT R34 GT-R is Approx 60K from Japan. Looks like this guy is looking to make a quick 80K Illegally on top of that. I’ll be laughing when it gets crushed. It’s honestly not worth the hassle just wait until it’s legal then you don’t need to keep looking over your shoulder all the time.

Oh and I’m in Canada so these are legal here now. neener neener neener!

“Some estimates put the cost as high as $250,000 to develop such a system.”

I’m sorry, but no it will not. If that is all they are charging, I can guarantee that system it is not conforming.

Looks at R34 GT-R parked on the street. Looks at Mazda AZ-1 buzzing through parking lot. Looks up at Canadian flag. Smiles.
