Kinja'd!!!

This would be my first expedition kinda thing and we are taking my Range Rover, a friend’s Mini Cooper S and another friend’s Turbo’d Honda Civic. The details are after the jump but what should I take with me? What are the necessary supplies? Do I need extra tires? Will my Range break down or the Mini will overheat first?

Kinja'd!!!

The total trip will take 83 hours if we drive non-stop (which we won’t, because we want to know the cities and take in the scenery) and is 4225 miles long. We will drive through the main highways but taking some side roads is something we can’t avoid. Driving through the Andes will also be quite a challenge.

Kinja'd!!!

Planing is still at 5% so nothing is completely and truly set in stone and we have one year to get everything done. So any tips?

Survival shit I agree with, but what is survival shit? Heinz baked beans and bread? Maybe some Froot Loops?

Camera is mandatory, I’m sure I’d lose the notepad 15 minutes into the trip.

Spanish would be nice, big wallet for gas, bording crossings, vehicle shipping between Panama and Colombia, and breakdowns with uncommon cars in your route (if you think land rover parts are expensive in the US, wait till you have to have them shipped to some unknown town in Nicaragua)

Precautions are always good, especially when driving in high end cars.

Like extra engine oil, jack, flashlights, sleeping bags, bottled water, batteries, jumper cables, dry food, fix a flat. Just stuff that would help you out in case something came up.

I don’t know. Depending on the age of the Rangy a couple of hatchbacks don’t strike me as huge moneybags on wheels.

You should keep one reliable car. Don't dell the Tribeca.

In all honesty though, it’s hard to know what you’ll need without a solid itinerary/route plan. A full size spare is a must, and jack equipt. with basic tools, first aid kit in each vehicle, blankets, flashlights. Don’t overpack, and don’t carry stuff for every eventuality.

EDIT: MUSIC. Good music. I forget because the Defender has no stereo.

Roof bars and a roof box, or expedition roof rack then. LEAVE NO VALUABLES UP THERE.

If you’re going all the way to Santiago, then continue on to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. Valparaiso is very charming, colorful old buildings dating from its heyday in the 19th century before the Panama Canal reduced its trading importance, with funiculars from that time (“ascensors”) which look unsafe but are used daily by the locals. It’s a port, and Chile’s tall ship the Esmeralda is based there I think, I saw it docked there. You can also recreate the Top Gear episode where they slide down the dunes, I think it took place near there. Vina del Mar just up the coast is relatively upscale, with a casino (not Monte Carlo by any stretch), and the coast itself is nice (big beachgoing area in season), they have music festivals there with big name acts. Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda’s oceanfront house is also a tourist attraction a bit south of Valparaiso; it’s funky, he collected ship figureheads among other things. Chile is very modern near Santiago, so no worries once you are near there. Well, as in all countries, you do have to be mindful of pickpockets and the like, but no more so than elsewhere.

Hell, I probably see more Teslas than I do Corollas.

I know I’m a little late to the party here but my phone and kinja were having an argument for the past few weeks and weren’t speaking to each other. Congrats on the Rangie! Before going on your trip, make sure to replace all of the coolant hoses and the reservoir. A radiator wouldn’t be a bad idea either to be honest. Maybe a water pump just for fun. Other than that you should be fine. Hoses and reservoir at the very least. Should be a fun trip. I would probably bring two extra spare tires, full sized of course, just in case. Maybe a few cans of fix a flat and shine basic tools, just to be really safe.
