Is my transmission fucked?

It won’t go out of first gear after sitting at a stoplight or idling. Turn it off, back on, it works slightly, but then doesn’t work after that. At first it was intermittent but now it’s constant. Transmission bad altogether? Shifter cable, vacuum lines, computer issues? Fluid is good. It’s a 4 speed automatic. Wondering if maybe the trans is just overheating but I’m lost. And pissed off. Please give advice!

I test drove a 73 Cutlass once with a TH350. It stayed in first until I reconnected a vacuum line.

Get it looked at immediately. Same thing was happening in my dads truck but with third gear, tranny shop said it would take around $1300 to fix. ‘cause the problem was internal.

So yeah, get it looked at.

aaah cool cool. My 96 I30 has about the same miles, but the trans is good.

Are there any codes? Even if the CEL isn’t on you could have some transmission-related codes.

Ever change the fluid?

Well,

1. That’s a sign of damn good quality!

2. It’s probably a bit tired, check A/T fluid.

Sounds bad. Here’s what you need to do;

Replace transmission and motor while your at it

Swap in VQ

attach 6 speed manual

attach turbocharger and get a tune

MAKE THE FARTCAN CIVIC CLUB CRY MOAR

Can you override it with the L-2-3 selections on the gear lever? If so, it’s probably a shift point sensor, and it’s fucked unless you want to spend more than the value of the car on it. I’d just treat it like a semi-manual until it dies completely.

But a transmission with 92k miles would set me back only $275.

Hey, that’s not bad if it makes your car driveable for a long time after....

If it works and hasn’t been sitting forever, that might not be a bad idea. I still can’t view mid-high mileage autos as anything other than time bombs, though.

There’s always that potential. But I’ve good luck with the car in general. And that other car with the transmission was wrecked fairly recently and is at a pick and pull. 250k+ miles on one transmission is pretty impressive though, time bomb or not.
