I thought the motto was “simplify and add lightness”?

That is only the motto of one car company that has been fighting off bankruptcy for decades.

1. My personal motto is “features on a car are good”.
2. I *think* that feature may be aimed at the person(s) who isn’t driving.

I would imagine but then I see commercials where Chevy is showcasing their text response feature on their cars and I start to get confused.
My default text response while driving is nothing.

Ah yes Lotus. The thing is about them, they keep simplifying right now to stay a live and they lightened their line up. So I mean it works.

Still, you got Brt’ed

I don’t even understand the controversy. It’s a hot spot, that’s integrated into the car. That’s it. That’s all it is. It doesn’t even add a lot of weight or complexity to anything. It’s useful for those who want it, and for those that don’t, it literally doesn’t make a difference to the everyday driving habits if you own said vehicle.
Why you think current automotive companies shouldn’t be adding this feature into the car, I do not understand. It’s such a small thing.

My thoughts as well. It’s like cruise control; it’s just so stupid, so simple, and so cheap - whether you’re going to use it or not, there’s no reason for them not to include it as standard anymore.

Someone is flipping the F out on me because I said it was possible for a 5 series GT to be miss categorized as a wagon. WTF man, chill.

No, sir. You’re a Bertelshrowd.

I think the argument stems from the fact that it gives drivers another avenue to get distracted. Ideally, yes, this would only benefit the passengers of the vehicle. But we all know this will be abused by people who think they can multitask when they should be focusing on the road.

I still don’t know how you get that from the letters in my screen name...

But the driver already probably has a smartphone that they can fuck around with. It doesn’t change anything for the driver.
This is why any arguments against it are always so flawed. It doesn’t offer anymore connectivity functionality than what most people already have in their pockets.
Except it’s integrated into the car. That is literally the only difference and it seems to drive people insane.

Whatever, these people are on their phones all the time anyway. Before that, they were on their Arby’s sandwiches.
These people can’t be stopped.

I think more of a proverb around these parts

Didn’t you know that wifi in the car is “the dream”?!?!
I’m with you, I think it’s unnecessary and just another outlet for distracted driving. I bet in 5 years when 4glte is obsolete and the dealers want $500 for a new adaptor people will complain about that too
![]() 05/05/2015 at 14:16 |

I didn’t!
But yeah, unnecessary cost/fad.

Haha the lady says it on one of the Chevy commercials.

True, but the point is that it’s not okay to check your smartphone when you’re driving. Just sounds like manufacturers are enabling it, is all.
If the majority of people are doing something improperly, does that make it correct?

Damn you, now I want Arby’s.

I started reading through the “wifi for passengers” comments, and it reminded me of that time I drove a group of people to a ski day trip.
Me: Driving.
My buddy: shotgun.
His two friends*: Backseat.
They all pulled out mobile devices and headphones and started to watch something five minutes after we got on the highway.
Fuck that. Nope. Fuck you guys. I’m not your parent. I’m not your driver. No way I’m going to offer to drive, get up 45 minutes before the rest of you, pick you up, drop you off, and then sit there by myself.
Radio went up.
* Picked the two of them up in their apartment at 7:30am Had to wait 30 minutes because they weren’t ready. Then we had to drive to one of their friend’s house and pick up a ski jacket for them to borrow. Then just as we were getting on the highway, they asked if we could stop for breakfast. Planned on getting on the slopes by 9:30 but didn’t get there until almost lunchtime. They wasted two hours of time, and I wasn’t about to let them sit back there and relax with an in-flight movie.
I told my buddy that we would meet them there next time. No more super-fun-vanagon time for those pieces of shit.

I fucking hate that shit. If it’s not my biggest pet peeve it’s in my top 3.

I didn’t say you should check your smartphone while driving.
I said having a built-in hotspot doesn’t at all change the behavior that occurs inside of the vehicle. If you’re a prick who checks your phone using your own data connection, you’re going to be a prick who uses the data connection in your car.
It doesn’t encourage, enable, or change anything as far as behavior goes. That’s why the animosity I see some people have towards just confuses the hell out of me. It’s like claiming that using cruise control on a long highway drive encourages you to be a lazy driver.

I was going to ask “which part of my story” but I’m just going to assume that it’s “all of it”

Correct- the whole thing.
Hey, this nice person is offering to drive us. How can we turn “miserable” up to 11?

I’m not entirely certain, either. I do know that a couple of Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPAs in a fairly short period of time were involved, however.

Snowboarding trip this winter...fucking 3am start to the day to pick people up and head north. Bluetooth and spotify for caraoke and conversations. On the way back, naps.
Keep your fucking phones in your pockets and talk to me.

I wouldn’t mind having cellular data in the interest of having an always up-to-date nav system.
That’s one of the big arguments towards using a phone / tablet vs in-car nav. Google Maps is regularly updated, and doesn’t cost anything, besides your
soul
usage data being logged. Imagine if the in-car head unit did the same, instead of needing to be updated every year for $1-200?

As a child whose family didn’t take planes to travel, but drove everywhere (Hi there over 15 hours to Florida in the back of a Saturn Vue) this sounds like the best thing to come to cars since the radio IMO. I wanna use my laptop/tablet but not suck the battery on my phone dry from sharing a (sometimes REALLY spotty) data connection, this sounds like a great solution. And, IIRC, GM’s system at least uses a better satellite or something to make the connection more consistent. I say it’s useless to the driver, but is a godsend to passengers, especially on a road trip.
/wait to be bitched at that they should look out the window and enjoy the country passing them by yadda, yadda, yadda.

We had some long drives, too. The thing I have against this is that we have all the technology already so it’s redundant and an extra expense.
I can see the value from a parent’s perspective but smartphones and tablets or whatever are just as useful until a certain age without wifi. Once that age is hit, parents probably buy them smartphones anyways so there’s the data. You’re in a car, everyone has a cable to charge (seriously, gave my gf’s cousin a ride and BAM! cable appeared). In the car by yourself? Useless feature. It’ll become useless in a few years, anyways, as systems upgrade across the country (though...well, that could be extended by forever).
Once you hit the age where you’re driving friends and they all pull out their phones or whatever to browse instead of chat or at least interact once in a while, it’s obnoxious. Seriously obnoxious.

Agreed. The pricks will be pricks.

Chevy even shows that it’s a fucking list. It’s like Chevy’s advertising things that can be blamed on the driver during the next round of recalls.

That frickin’ blew my mind when I saw it.
