They do what most manufacturers these days do.
Make a wagon, raise it up a little bit, call it a Crossover, and you get sales.
Because Wagon is a toxic word to the average consumer.

The X1 is taller than the considerably larger Mercedes, but not by all that much. But look at the proportions. It’s not that tall, but it’s got CUV proportions. It’s rather clear in the picture you posted.
I think the X1 is a crossover crossover. It doesn’t fit a single segment perfectly. It’s too short and chubby for a wagon. I’d argue it’s a tallish hatchback/CUV crossover, just like the Merc GLA.

They know it isnt very utilitarian!
