A buddy of mine just bought this sweet thing for $950. Its a 1982 Kawasaki 440 stand-up jet ski. Now, I’m not a watercraft guy at all. But, this thing is badass.
The outside has its fair share of wear (still looks decent, though), but the mechanicals are mint. Motor was recently rebuilt, and its got a new carb, new exhaust manifold, etc. What do you guys think?

That thing looks like a work out. I bet after a couple hours on the water, one is wore out.

That thing is awesome! If I had seen that for sale at that price last summer when I was looking to buy a jet ski I would have been all over that. What lake does he take it out on? I might see him this summer.

Now that’s an original! Looks so unstable, and therefore fun.

Wow, that is... I had that exact ski. Sure it’s not a 440? Been a long time since my jetski days (literally 1984 ish to about 1990) but that thing was great. Neat to see one hot-rodded, mine had a few tricks but there was not much available in those days.
Does it have a handlebar spring? (looks like it might). That was one of the best things I did to it. You really can’t beat the fun to price ratio you have there. I used to have a blast just foot down in the water like a motox bike for a turn and pivot. Half-crash, half-turn, it was really fun.
It never sank on me, but don’t try submarining too deep or you will take on too much water in the intake snorkel.

Oh, yeah, for sure. He actually went out right after he bought it. Said it was WAY hard.

For sure! Yeah, I thought it was a good price. He told me where he took it out, but I honestly don’t remember. I’m pretty sure its over by his buddy’s in Highland.

Ok, that’s pretty far South of where I usually go out on the lakes.

For sure! Lol

My parents live on a small lake I doubt you’ve heard of. Our sailboat is on Lake Fenton, but we occasionally take it to Seven Lakes park. With friends and stuff I also go out on Lake Ponemah, Silver Lake, Lobdell, some of the other ones West of 23. Nothing that far South or much more East than that though.

Shit, you’re right. Fixed. I would usually remember that (especially because it says it on the side), but I had a really long day at work. And sweet! I sure think its neat.
To be honest with you, I’m really not sure. I’d have to ask him. I would agree; you really can’t get much more fun for the price!

Gotta paint it wood-grain, and grow a mullet!

If he ever has a problem post up about it, mine broke down in almost every way so I have torn that thing apart and put it back together several times (tho it looks like some trick parts on there mine didn’t have obviously). Hope he has as many good times with it.
Pro tip: wax the bottom of the hull (we used to use various car waxes) for that extra bit of slipperyness.

I’ll be sure to do so. Thanks!
I’ll have to tell that to him.

Stand ups are so fun but kick your butt so bad. A few of my buddies have them and I only rode one once. I thought they were screwing with me when they told me to hold on to it when you’re falling off. Then I had to swim 150 yards to get back on it. Lesson learned. Between all the swimming and the effort just to stay up on it I was shot after 10 minutes, but they are definitely a ton of fun.
