I’m staying at my family’s apartment and I have all the major tourist traps planned already, but that leaves me a lot of time to spend still and some spare money. What should I do? Should I rent a classic car to drive around Monaco and pretend I have money? Any interesting different places I can visit by train?

Well, the Grand Prix of Monaco takes places the 21-24th of May, but you probably knew that. You must go if you’re there during that period. The prep for it goes on the week before. Renting a nice car for the trip would be a huge bonus, but it won’t be cheap.

If you like warships and have never been to a major fleet base (Pearl, Norfolk, etc.) then stop by Toulon, which has been a base for French warships in the Med since 1517.

If you like history, a visit to Avnignon up the Rhone River in Provence is worth it. The Papacy had its HQ here during the 14th century, its period curtain walls are in excellent shape, so excellent, you can walk almost the entire length of them.

The youth hostel near Cassis is on an amazing spot, and you can hike out to a calanque for some swimming and sunbathing during the day.

Kinja won’t let me post a link, search for the calanques de cassis and you’ll find everything you need.

We did a perfume factory tour when we were in that area and it was surprisingly interesting.. Neither my wife nor I are big into perfume, but the tour was still fun.

There is a cool ancient history museum down there that talks about Neanderthals and stuff. I can’t recall its name, but it is in a smaller town.

If you are looking for car related stuff, rent something small and find the routes the WRC uses for the Monte Carlo Rally. There are some amazing driving roads in the region.

Indeed I am, not having to pay for a hotel helped a lot.

Warships are something I like a lot but never really got the chance to be near one, I’ll stop by Toulon.

Carcassonne. It’s on my list of must-see places, medieval walled city. About 3 hours from Marseilles by car, according to Google Maps. The “XK-E Pyrenee” rally had it as a stopping point as described in Classic & Sports Car magazine, March 2015 issue.
