For stripping my drain plug and not telling me so I could find out the day before I leave on a big trip where will literally rely on my car for my life....you’re the best.
Temporary solution - remove pan, install permanent plug.
Long term solution - New lower pan, hopefully at your expense Mr. Mechanic.
Sad story, I don’t have time to do it myself because I am still packing so its going to be a buttrape at the dealer.
I went looking for a bad mechanic picture and decided to use this instead because; of course I did. What is going on here?!
EDIT: I change my own oil, It originally happened a while ago that involved a complete top end rebuild.

Well thanks to my P.O., instead of just being able to service my rear axle, they sealed it really well by welding the diff plug to the axle. But it’s worse than I originally thought, because they didn’t just tack a spot, no, the damned thing is welded all the way around and the plug is now deformed because of it. TL;DR: I’ll be needing a new housing soonish.

Sorry about the dealer. Man, that’s gotta be illegal to do that to your customers. Maybe this will make things easier for you.

why not JB weld? sure its janky but it should last for a long time until it can be rethreaded or replace the pan.

(I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist)

ooof, thankfully it shouldn’t be too hard to find a Toyota 8 inch housing. upgrade time!

No. Would be a fun way to send this rear axle to hell though...

I thought about it, but I don’t have confidence in JB weld. its coming with me on the trip as a last ditch but I would never put it on there to start.

Always do your own oil. It’s not worth the convenience to have an idiot do it.

Depending on the mfgr. you may only have to replace the plug. Fords have a harder steel insert in the pan than the plug. So the plug is what gives first.

too late, it was trashed by the previous shop that did a piss poor retap. I just called the dealer and they had to remove the pan and redrill to put in a helicoil because the last job was so bad.

For the time being, I plan on finding a donor vehicle with a manual and good rear housing this summer. It’s not too hard to find a blown one on any given CL. If the funds are there, it will be getting a Detroit locker.

That sucks.

Ouch. That's terrible. Was it a rockcrawler? I don't know why else someone would weld it.
