E90 3 Series. Original owner luckily saved the brochure and accessory brochure. I can post more if requested, but I’m pretty sure an online archive exists for BMW brochures.

Haha. I’ve always been curious how they tuned a v8 to get 200hp. How?! Did they remove 2 of your spark plugs?

They retarded the timing and used a small 2 barrel. The secret about 70s cars that a lot of younger people don’t know is that those horsepower figures were using a tune that was for EPA testing and few people ran that on the street. Most people also ripped out all of the emissions equipment and bolted on an intake, 4 barrel carb, and headers which would make that weak sauce 307 drive-able.

Don’t forget the effect of properly rating the motors as well. Before net ratings manufacturers seem to be much more....casual... with power ratings (both ways). I think big block chevy’s lost like 50hp by using net rating(even if it was the same motor as the year before)

I should add that the compression ratios were low and the head design was bad for performance so those engines were never going to be great unless you really tore them apart but they could be made acceptable.

It was a double blow. The net rating took effect the same year Chevy lowered compression ratios and emissions became the main object. The change for net is easier to see in Ford and Mopar engines because they didn’t lower compression until ‘72.
