So I got new insurance this week, I used their app to check on the policy only to find out that they have pre-terminated me before I even made a second payment. . . Well it seems like they took my money and said that we will cover you for a month and then you are fucked but we still haven’t contacted you directly about it. . . Good job All State!

Your notice is probably in the mail.

I work for an insurance company in Texas and there’s a law that we can cancel anyone’s policy within 60 days of them first signing up, but we have to mail them notice afterward.

It tends to happen when someone gets in an accident or files a claim right after signing up.

mail a notice afterward? "hey, we cancelled your insurance 20 days ago, hope nothing happened while you didn't know you were uninsured!"

That's helpful

Nope no claims, nothing at all. I actually haven’t even moved my car in 2 months. . .

Written notice of cancelation required.

They have to send notice at least 10 days before the date the cancellation is effective. And it doesn’t take that long for mail to arrive anywhere in Texas. It’s a big state, but it’s not that big.

One of my friends had this happen with Obamacare. He’d had his policy forever and liked it, got canceled cause it didn’t meet something in the new standard. Decides to try out the state exchange and found one he thought was alright. Paid for two months and found out that the state hadn’t sent in some of the stuff from the exhange site so he was never actually covered. Extremely lucky he didn’t break a leg in the gap.

Did they say why they cancelled you?

Also, (and I just finished writing this code) my company cancels people if there is a claim on a driver living in the same house that they didn’t tell the insurance agent about. Its to prevent people from letting their kids/roommates drive their cars while leaving them off the policy because they have a shit driving record. Many reasons why someone can get cancelled.

Nope, I literally just bought the coverage and went to check to see if I could access the proof online and it says my coverage is terminated effective may 22 2015. . . I bought the plan on the 28th of april. I also have no idea about my room mates driving records. My car very seldomly moves any more.

Yup, you’ve probably got a letter waiting in the mail explaining why they cancelled you.

Most likely someone fucked up and you shouldn’t have gotten coverage, and then whatever should have kept you out got picked up in a later review.

Its actually kind of funny how the sausage gets made and the loopholes that can come up. Just this week I found a hole in our code for automatically increasing and decreasing premiums based on how many accidents you have. See, we have three different tiers of premiums from best to worst. To be placed in the worst tier, you need 2 accidents in the last 3 years that weren’t your fault and/or 1 accident that was your fault. However, if you get more than that, instead of giving you the highest premiums it just does nothing. It’s supposed to send a notice to the underwriter so they can cancel the policy, but we have an automatic process for renewing policies and it bypasses that.

So, hilariously if you are one of our customers, you actually get better premiums if you have too many accidents.

I’m going to close that loophole soon, so it’ll probably be a rude awakening for a couple of folks when they get cancelation notices in the mail.

call ‘em up - they are legally obligated to give you written notice within a certain time frame, (like 30 days or 45 days notice.) It’s possible they found something, (ticket, accident, credit problem, etc) they don’t like - but it’s entirely possible their info is wrong too.
