..the highest number of years in production for a single model generation.

EDIT: The car has to be 1990 and newer.

The first car that comes to mind is the first gen Volvo XC90 which was in production from 2002-2014, a 12 year run.

This is the only right answer. From 1938 all the way to 2003.

Perfect answer but I changed the rules! It has to be 1990 and newer.

Makes it slightly more challenging! Seeing as the Mercedes G is 10,000 years old now I realized I made it pretty easy.

I think this one is actually the longest gen from 1990+

15 years with very little changes other than a slight facelift and a couple performance upgrades.

I remember back in high school a lady who worked at the bank down the street had one.

I also remember the knock against them at the end of the 15 years was it was the same car (basically) for the past 15 years.

Ahh, that’s not that long! By the time the new NSX comes out the concept itself will be 15 years old.

Sigh, so do I.

There will never be a real successor to the Crown Vic. All the new options are nowhere near as good. Wish they kept making them because people would keep buying them.

Has to be the most bulletproof car that I can think of. I was sad to see them go, I thought the Marauder was so good looking to!

My father in-law is a cop and he said all the officers just hate the Taurus/Explorers.

The only major change the 911 has ever went through is going from air-cooled to water-cooled!

One of the best cars ever made in my opinion. Easy to fix, easy to repair, comfortable, pretty quick, massive trunk, good visibility, that 4.6 V8 roar, good looks. Something that the new offerings from Ford just can’t fill the shoes of.

The new Taurus and Exploder simply aren’t suited for the task as well as the CVPI, the Impala sucks flat out, the Caprice isn’t that popular either. Not even to mention how crappy the Charger is. Those things spend more time in the shop than anywhere else.

Apparently they tested the Chargers and the blind spots are what really turned them away from the car. He also said the explorers constantly break and are in the shop for transmission problems, electrical provlem, etc.

The explorers are leased and he was telling me that for $70/month more per car they could have went with the Tahoe PPV instead.

Kinja'd!!! jkm7680 > AM

I wouldn’t doubt it, Ford tried to pack way too much technology into their interceptors. The Tahoe PPV is probably better though. They really shouldn’t have those two civilian cars and tried to optimize them for Police. The P71 seemed more as if they almost threw in civilian versions as an afterthought.

There’s tons of departments out there still using 10+ year old CVPIs. I’ve seen two Maryland State Troopers using 2004 Crown Vics in the last couple months along with multiple local departments. I’ve even seen a couple ‘01s still in service alongside newer vehicles.

In my town we have only 1 or 2 crown Vic’s left, they use them for RIDE programs. Other than that I’ve seen a couple Ford Edge’s, a Grand Caravan, a few unmarked impala’s and a shit load of explorers.

The old man said they have an unmarked Venza and a Nissan Quest as well but I have no idea what their purposes are.

In my area, less than 50% of the patrol cars are Exploders and Tauruses. The rest of them are CVPIs. The night shift uses mainly CVPIs though.

Y’all are thinking way too domestic. Has to be something developed in the East. I’m thinking of communist designs that served as the standard car for an entire country for generations, many of which are still manufactured.

I nominate the second-gen Ford Ranger. Since I don’t count minor updates as a new vehicle, it was basically the same thing from 1993-2011. They made the same truck for 18 years.

Kinja'd!!!

How about LR3/LR4? Came out for 2003 I believe (same year as the Volvo), but still going. May not win overall, but has to be at the top for newer, American market vehicles. And, yes, I consider them one in the same - an engine upgrade and minor refresh does not a new vehicle make.

(I get to drive the one pictured - a new one with the S/C V6, and I have to say, I like it a lot better than I thought I would. Would get one with the 5.0 V8 though, fuel economy be damned. The V6 just sounds dainty in something so purposeful.)

Kinja'd!!! AM > Mthew_M
05/02/2015 at 00:33

Yeah you need that V8 to move such a tank! That one looks pretty good though, wheels look a tad small but the rest is fine.

Kinja'd!!! Mthew_M > AM
05/08/2015 at 17:15

Kinja'd!!!1

The S/C V6 actually has plenty of power for it, it just doesn’t seem quite right. Probably something akin to the Ecoboost F-150 and Mustangs - there should be a different noise coming out of this thing. Doesn’t help that I drive a Supercharged Range Rover from time to time, which makes a great noise on startup, and this makes the same starter motor noise, but then when it fires up, it’s hopelessly unsatisfying. And, the wheels look better in person, but of course they’re no match for the nice ones that come on the next trim up - this is just a standard HSE.
