Was curious about how the average power to weight ratio has changed over time and thought I would collect the notes from my Googling.
First, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that graphs power AND weight by manufacturer.
Not exactly what I was looking for but you do see Daimler and BMW fight it out for best ratios over time ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ).
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Also found an
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
with some interesting trends over time, including a European country comparison with Sweden coming out on top in terms of average power per car.
Seems like the data is limited to 1997, so I am curious how these trends have held up.
And finally, a graph of average power/weight over time... in Belgium. (The top line is for the best selling models.)
I am still looking for a more comprehensive analysis of how power to weight is changing over time, but I did run across !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! showing power to weight for a sporting cross-section of cars.

I don’t even know how you get that looking at this?

The diagonal line at the top is representative of 15 lbs per hp. And it’s really best ratios over recent time for the whole fleet, with Chrysler (Dodge) right on their heels.

Mazda’s got the lightness thing on lock; just need to add some power!

I’m not sure how to go about reading the time scale, but there are a bunch of lines above and in between BMW’s and Diamler’s for quite a bit of it. I don’t see how those two particular lines have been “fighting it out for the best ratios”, just that they have a few that are up there. I’m seeing that Diamler cars were always heavy, they just gained power, most others gained weight and power, and there’s the 80’s in there somewhere where the Big 3 lost weight with no power gains, then followed the usual weight/power gain. But nowhere can I see that BMW and Diamler are consistently higher than the rest, and I’m not sure I’d be able to even if someone explained it.

You have to watch the animated version to get the sense of time.
