I prefer the older SCs over the newer ones for some reason.

Have no idea what clarkson thinks of it, but I think they look absolutely hideous.

He named it the worst car in the history of the world in a year-end DVD. Even before he said that, I thought it was one of the fugliest things on 4 wheels.

Worst car in the world all things considered. Thats an important part, there are definitely worse cars but Lexus knew better.

You know what I just realized the SC430 needs? A massive GT style wing.
See, the main problem with the car is aesthetics. It just looks too soft and rounded and the too-close symmetry between the front and back halves doesn’t do it any favors.
But if you add a wing back there, it breaks up the symmetry and gives it a bit more agression. Moves it closer to the sporty wedge shape and away from the rounded bubblecar look.
What do y’all think?

This angle works. If Lexus hadn’t fallen for the stupid folding metal roof craze and made a proper coupé the 430 could have been a glorious GT. This and maybe a 2GZ-GE.

Anything can be fixed with a 1200hp 2JZ and it was the last car to have a tape player!

As a former Intrepid owner, I can promise you there ARE worse cars than this one.

Don’t...Just. Don’t.

Agreed.

The whole point of said DVD was not to find the objectively worst car in the world, but the worst car in relation to what the manufacturer is capable of. Hence all those Peugeots. The SC430 being awarded that questionable honour is technically just massive praise for everything else Lexus has made.

The SC430 was first visited by Top Gear years before the “worst car” pronouncement, and at the time, the complaint was most clearly that there was just nothing there. Looks nice to some, but no real standout qualities to appreciate, and an utter failure at being an engaging roadster, to the point that they found the Tiburon a much better car for the money... and in general, really.

I don’t recall Top Gear’s first look at it.
I just remember looking at it way back when on a showroom floor and losing my lunch at the looks, the weight...and the price.

They didn’t need to do that, they had the SC400.

I mean that the 430 should have been a coupe. With a 2GZ-GE. The 400 was fine, but a little old by 2001.
