Porsche Carrera S (or 4S, or Cabrio, or Targa) vs Porsche Macan Turbo ?

Sort of a strange comparison, I know, but my co-worker wants to get a Porsche, but needs 4 seats.

However, A) He has a very steep driveway both at home and at work, as well as his area just having awful roads, and B) His left leg is disabled, so no stick-shift.

As a result, this rules out the Turbo, Turbo S, GT3, GT3 RS, and GTS 911s. (He’s also not considering the Cayenne because it’s too big, nor the Panamera, because he doesn’t like how it looks haha)

Do you think the Macan Turbo is still a fun car, despite being sort of…not a car?

Do you think the Carrera S is fine as it is, or are there people out there who actually drive one and think, “You know, what this car needs is more horsepower.” Does the sum of its parts negate the fact that some of its competitors have more HP? What does the GTS have over the S that’s a must-have?

Which would you rather have?

ha. I was just on the Porsche configurator. If I had the funds it my choice would be the Targa 4s its such a unique car and I love the way it looks. Its 20-30k more then the 4s so I’d be tempted to forgo the Targa top. Im sure the Macan is a great vehicle but holds no appeal to me at.

The turbo s is PDK only. Hence the insane 0-60 times when coupled (pun intended) with AWD

Indeed it is, but my co-worker did the math and the Turbo’s angle of approach is too low for his driveway; the “highest” Carrera he can do is the S. Thanks for the tip though.

Sorry the way it was worded I thought you meant it was ruled out because it was a standard. My mistake! I bet the Macan turbo does it's best impression of a sports car

I have a regular Carrera and steep driveways can cause problems. GTS would be totally out of the question in that case (it has similar approach angle as Turbo).

The back Carrera seats are not really seats but velcroed-on cushions on the front of the engine bay hump. My 4 year old fits okay back there (without a car seat) and its a bit snug for the 9 year old.

Also the Carrera is pretty low so he should make sure he can get in and out in a crowded parking lot with that bum leg.

If none of the above are problems than I would rather have a Carrera or Carrera S over any other car (which is why I do!!!!)

One more thing - for some reason 911 horsepower is more efficient than other manufacturers horsepower. If you compare 0-60 or track times of a 911 with other cars with similar power/weight ratios, the 911 usually comes out ahead. Maybe Porsche underrates their engine, or maybe they have fewer power losses with rear engine. I don’t know.

Really? Wow! Yeah I thought the GTS’ ground clearance was stupidly low, it’s worse than a GTR or F-Type. I’m surprised to hear the regular one is poor too, geez. I guess the whole “Porsche is the ultimate DD take it anywhere!!!111!” is getting less true the more I do research!

How are you liking the regular Carrera? Is there really a point to getting the S? How is the “Frunk” for storage space?

Do you happen to know how steep your driveway is?

I think the S is a good value if you can afford it. It has significant more horsepower, better brakes, pretty red calipers, better sound, some other niceties. My Carrera had some upgrades to make it more like an S (upgraded brakes, exhaust) and it was super good deal.

I love the car (mine is a 997 BTW)! The frunk is good enough for light grocery shopping, case of beer, dog food, carry on bag, etc... Putting heavy stuff in the frunk reduces your ground clearance even more.

The Carrera/Carrera S ground clearance is not that bad (11% approach angle I think) - but there are some gas stations or grocery stores I avoid because I know I wont be able to exit without cringeworthy scraping. I have to enter my driveway at an angle. Main problem is the curb of the sidewalk. Pic:

Best thing for your friend (or you) to do is just to drive it!!!

Four seats? I used my 911 for years as a take-the-kids-to-school beast of burden, but that’s when the kids were still in the pre-puberty stages. Those back seats are useful, but tiny. I still sentence my kids to riding back there on occasion, but only for short distances - I’m not a monster. If there are angle of approach questions, I don’t think I would enjoy worrying about dragging my front lip or tail pipes every single time I went anywhere. The 911 is sublime, but the Macan is probably the best bet given the parameters here. I’ve heard the Macan Turbo is a real hoot, so the driving experience would probably be enjoyable. The downside is that it’s not a 911, if iconography is a thing for your co-worker.

Sat in a Macan S at the auto show. If I was in his position (needing 4 seats, no manual), I’d be very tempted, honestly... Does he want to get it to the track or take it on back road drives, or is it really just for city and highway driving? And he’s set on Porsche, I assume?

The Macan is a bit of a bargain (if you can say that) compared to a 911 as well... Carrera S starts at $99k now!

Weight over drive wheels helps a lot for acceleration tests, and for pulling out of tight corners on the track. Low weight has also always been a Porsche advantage at the track against many competitors, regardless of similar power/weight ratio. When braking and in a curve, physics doesn’t care how much power you have on top for the next straight - ha!

Great points! I’m sure the lower weight helps the already great brakes. A GT3 weighs something like 400 lbs less than a Z06 or M4.

Man, I’ve always lusted after the GT3s, and now they’ve made the GT4 to tempt me even more!
