But don’t tell us what you drive. Let’s see if we can guess the car from only the underhood shot. I think most people already know what I drive but regardless, here’s my grungy engine bay. Let’s see your engines, oppo!

I think most people know my Fusion so I’m posting this which is what I’ll be driving in a few weeks. I’m sure this is a really easy one, but to make it even easier the plastic cover that was taken off reads DOHC 16V

And just for fun, some of my previous cars. These are probably a bit trickier, but they all have some kind of distinctive identifying feature left in for the eagle-eyed ;)

That rotten orange fill cap is quite obvious, isn’t it? Not to mention in your other shots, a straight six with forward tilt hood and a tiny four with two carbs - each iconic in their own right. Nothing terribly iconic about a MK1 Gold, of course, but the whole picture is fairly distinct.

As you can see, I have a long and illustrious history with fueling systems that are thought to be black magic. In hindsight, I’m pretty sure that a transverse four with K-Jetronic is a pretty dead giveaway. It isn’t technically a Golf, though ;).

I’ve been looking for a 2.0 Turbo CT version of the car in the 4th pic but not having a ton of luck. I found one but it was in a very ugly color...

His first pic is an MG, unless I’m sorely mistaken. His second pic is a VW, I believe Scirocco. The fifth is a Rover SD1 turbo, and the last I believe to be a Triumph 2000.
![]() 04/23/2015 at 10:18 |

Correct on the Cherokee, and the second one is a V8, but not an Audi:
The color’s a bit off in that picture, the yellow is much more retina-searing in person.

20-valve Blacktop 4AGE engine swap. It’s a pretty easy bolt-in swap, hardest part is wiring, and it adds a good amount of power. It does sound pretty damn good if I do say so myself

I should go fire up the one in the garage for you and make a video of it making lovely noises. You have all the floors sorted out in yours?
![]() 04/23/2015 at 10:37 |
|
I’m going to try to get it off to the sandblaster today, and I’ve held off on the floors going back in until I finish the door posts, which has been waiting on the sandblasting... I have mostly finished putting the rear suspension back together, at least.
![]() 04/23/2015 at 10:43 |

Yeah, most that I’ve seen have been in somewhat ...unsubtle... colour schemes. For a car lacking sporting pretensions, they’re really quite good to drive. I’d love to get behind the wheel of an Activa one day.
![]() 04/23/2015 at 10:43 |

Ours is pretty much ready for paint now, the doors, tail gate, hood and fenders are all jammed and living in the back of my van. It could actually drive around right now, but its buried in the garage still.
![]() 04/23/2015 at 10:47 |
|
“Tailgate”
With mine, I only, only have to replace like half of the outer skin, sandblast the rest from the inside, finishing straightening the inner skin that some dunce beat out into a basket, and cut and weld like 9 little patches to undo the previous “stick this thing back together” “fixes”. Then grind off remaining bondo. Aside from that, it’s fine, really!

Both at once? You’re a brave man.
I kid, I kid. I loved them both to bits. There’s still a Mk1 2000 Estate in my family, that my grandparents ordered from the factory in 1968, and we used as a wedding car when I got married. The story goes that they wanted a Jag XJ6, but they needed something that could cart the dogs around. My grandmother still drives it regularly, but I’d love to restore it one day.
![]() 04/23/2015 at 10:54 |

So amazed it holds 8 gallons+ of diesel.
![]() 04/23/2015 at 10:59 |
|
Correct – my SD1 wasn’t turbocharged, though; just the regular carburetted V8 model. The turbo ones are crazy-rare, built by a third-party tuner, and had the carbs mounted to the turbochargers on either side of the engine rather than sitting on top. The factory high-performance SD1 Vitesse had Lucas fuel injection instead. Only the Brits would think it a good idea to put sidedraught carburettors on a V8.
The Triumph was a 2500, rather than a 2000, but as far as I know, there’s no way to tell that from the photo.

Can’t drive it yet. I assume it is probably still locked up. Also I may have broke a spark plug or two. But I would really like to get the engine unfrozen.

How is the Camaro treating you?
![]() 04/23/2015 at 11:06 |

The second is German, but otherwise, you’re spot-on. The third is my current daily-driver 850R, and the fourth is my dearly missed Xantia. It was a really early model – the build date was the same week as the official model launch – which meant that it would still ‘sink’ when shut off (later ones had isolation valves that stopped that from happening)

I’m probably going to go on a trip toward the end of May, after which 505Turbeaux wants me to help inventory some stuff in Maine and hang out. Are you likely to be in the vicinity of the Capri in mid-June? If so, my possible detour through O I Ho may work and I can at least look at it with you...
![]() 04/23/2015 at 11:12 |

Mid June I think we should be good. I know I am going on a fly fishing trip but I should be back by then. I would for you to come see the Capri if you wanted to. But there is no need for you to go out of the way either.
What are you helping 505 inventory?

Stuff at a mine that belongs to his girl’s step-dad. A whole bunch of old cars and weirdness hoarded over a long period of time, including such oddities as this ‘43 Ford “Burma Jeep”:
I wouldn’t be going so much out of the way, because I want to see the air museum in Dayton some time, and that would be as good a time as any.
![]() 04/23/2015 at 11:16 |

Oh cool, I like the idea of having a car bought new in the family and still owning it all these years later.
My grandparents had a 2500 at some point too. Not long after they sold their 30s Riley Kestrel to a young couple for £38!
![]() 04/23/2015 at 11:23 |
|
The museum will be worth the drive in itself. I think Packard has a museum in Dayton as well you could stop at.
That 43 Jeep is a total gem. I love it it looks like you’ll have a fun day.

Nope, way cold. I just realized every car pictured is from the same manufacturer. Bonus points if you identify the engines.
![]() 04/23/2015 at 11:52 |

Lovely! My father was looking at Rileys at one point – we nearly bought a very nice RM (yay, preselector gearboxes), and we went to see a gorgeous special based on a pre-war Kestrel.
We’ve had a bunch of Triumphs in my father’s side of family. As well as the 2000 Estate, my uncle had a Mk2 2000 saloon, my parents had the blue 2500 for years, and at one point, we had a 2.5PI and a 2000 parts car as well. Aside from the Estate, they’re all gone now, but I want to make sure that it stays in the family for as long as possible.
Are you still thinking of engine swaps?

Shit I meant Duratec
![]() 04/23/2015 at 15:26 |

You are right, but the SHO was a completely different animal from the Duratec. It was developed by Yamaha, and it was also built the generation before the Duratec, alongside the Vulcan V6.

Mark III the photo says so but I don’t think the engine matches the photo.
Due to the massive gap between hood and radiator the last one is maybe a Torino
Fox Body Mustang ..maybe
The first is obviously a Flintstone car
And the second to last one I have no clue
![]() 04/23/2015 at 15:47 |
|
Well, the picture does match, that is a Mk III of some kind, but a Mk III what? I detest mustangs. The top one is a flintstone at the moment, but it is a version of another car in there.
And, the green vehicle is in fact a 1970 Ford Torino. It was sold to a fellow in England back in 2005 or 2006. Cant remember exactly.

It’s all done apart from a bit of welding in the boot (which I’m hoping to get done this weekend).
Then it’ll get insured temporarily to get it MOT’d, and then take over from the Jag on daily duties when the insurance for that comes round for renewal :)
![]() 04/23/2015 at 17:15 |
|
Perhaps for a 2000 :) It’d be nice to get one of the pre-prod 2600 engined cars and a 2600 engine from an SD1 :)
I’ve also thought whether it’d be possible to stick a 2.3l Saab turbo in the front of one, seeing as it’s a development of the Triumph slant 4 (albeit a radical one).
A Stag V8 with injection and a bit of tuning to hit 200bhp would be nice too :)
Oh, I saw a Riley special at the Brighton Speed Trials (a low-scale drag event down the Brighton marina shoreline). I didn’t think much of it, other than that it looked excellent, until it ran 12 seconds in the quarter mile.
12 bloody seconds. On a standard street not a rubbered in drag strip. On 1930s width rubber.
And this is why. Two superchargers. Each one about half the size of the engine itself.
Damn cool car :)
