It’s either get one or take my engine a few towns over to a machine shop to measure Taper & Out Of Round.

Get a nice micrometer, and a set of telescoping gauges on Ebay. All mine are older Starretts. Practice measuring on a bearing race with to make sure you are consistent before measuring the engine (bearing races usually have a standard part number stamped into the side, look up the ID online).

When you use the mic, don’t run it until the thumb screw clicks. rock the gauge through the mic, progressively closing the mic until the gauge just bushes the anvil.

I love my fowler digital that reads to .00015. Very repeatable. Inexpensive too
