I’m running through some online quotes to get a rough idea of what I can expect to pay for motorcycle insurance, and I get a quoted amount of $261 for a 12 month policy. At the bottom of the page though there is a line that says “MCCA [Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association, I think] fee: $186”.
Is this fee included in the $261, or will I actually be paying almost double the amount they quoted?
I’ve never paid for insurance before so I really have no idea what this type of thing even costs.

I pay like $80/yr for my semi-sporty bike, 261+186 seems sky high unless youre 18 and getting insurance on a crotchrocket

I did the quote as a 20 year old male with zero riding experience and no previous insurance policies (accurate), so I wouldn’t be surprised if the rate was fairly high. Bike I put in was a ~10 year old Ninja 250 (likely), which doesn’t seem inherently dangerous but could have high rates of accident/theft/etc., so I’m not sure what effect that could have on it. The $4xx amount does seem high to me though. I’m hoping it’s just $261 out the door.

Come to Canada. We have great rates. Clean abstract, almost 40, licensed on bikes since I was 16. Bike is 7 years old, bright yellow, and a cruiser.
$1200 a YEAR.

Did I mention that it is a 1300? It’s in the HLP category up here (Ho Lee Phuc)

While I respect the choice of a Ninja 250 (I started on one, and think it’s a great starter bike), you’ll find it’s actually MORE expensive to insure the 250 than it is to insure a larger bike.
Insurance companies base quotes on statistics. A 20 year old male with no prior experience, on a stereotypical beginner bike? Statistically, you’re far more likely to crash and file an insurance claim — which is why you’ll see higher rates. Humor yourself and do a quote on a larger bike (but nothing like a Hyabusa, those are in a different class on their own). There’s a bit of a price break in the 500-700cc range, with insurance rates going back up around the liter bike-mark (this is the trend for sport bikes, at least. Cruisers and dual sports are different, obviously).
That said, you really don’t have such a bad rate for insurance! I think I paid around $25 / month, or around $300 per month. I would call the insurance company directly, and ask them about that ¤possibly¤ additional fee.

Insurance in the state of Michigan is a little different - the MCCA is a separate, quazi governmental body set up to fund catastrophic, (potentially crippling,) financials losses for carriers that operate in the state. The current $186 fee is the same for any vehicle and it drops right on top of the rest of the cost. Basically it’s kind of like insurance for the insurance company so it doesn’t go bust if something really terrible happens.

same for me. insurance on 2 bikes (grom and cb500f) is 98/year. grom alone was about 80

So assuming this quote is accurate I’d be paying somewhere in the neighborhood of $4xx per year?

It doesn’t look like anyone has answered your question: yes, the $186 is included in your quote. Total will be $261.

Yes! Thank you!

Have you taken an MSF course? That might drop it a lot.
I’m paying $95 in Mass. for an older 600cc sport/tourer. But I’m 40 and have a car policy as well.

That $186 is mandatory in Michigan so $261 is a good price because only $75 of that actually goes to the insurance company. What part of Michigan are you in?

Oh ok, awesome. I’m in France right now, but I’ll be going back to live with my parents over the summer before my last year of school. They live a little bit south of Flint, in a small town called Fenton.

Yeah I plan on taking one, and that was factored into the quote. Apparently the $186 dollars is included in the quote, and that’s a mandatory fee assessed per vehicle by a state governmental insurance body, so I would be paying that regardless. As JKER also pointed out, that means my actual insurance rate is only about $75.

correct - the MCCA is in addition to any pricing offered by the carrier

I’ve got conflicting reports now—JKER claims it’s already included in the quote.
