I agree, and shall argue vehemently with anyone who disagrees with me.

I agree, but I wish to clear up a few things.
Lucas Electronics went out of business in 1996, before this or your Mini Cooper were made.
Your 2003 Mini Cooper is a BMW, and BMW is German.

How come the Brits still carry the burden of being terrible with electronics? Has no one heard about the complaints towards Volkswagen?

People will tell you that’s an English car and you should stay away.. I say “it’s an english car and you should buy it” :)

fuck I meant to say 2000, my olds (soon to be turbo!) is a 2003. shit, i lived in europe so excuse my english!!! i always mix up the damn things only have 2 cars in my life i kept the mini cooper for a long long time
my grandma had it for a year since new then i got it after she was done but yeah it was a 2000

Gotcha, that clears it up.

why did bmw use lucas?
![]() 04/20/2015 at 21:24 |
|
They didn’t. A 1982 Mini would have Lucas, a 2002 BMW/Mini wouldn’t.

The Jetta also had Lucas electronics during the 90’s and got a fair share of complaints. The majority seemed to be with the British though.

Didn’t someone on here pick up a Jag R vehicle (I think it was an S-Type R) and had it go to hell in a handbasket immediately?
![]() 04/20/2015 at 21:26 |

Not that I read of, but it wouldn’t surprise me. They aren’t known for longevity.

It’s a Ford, how unreliable can it be? It is stunning and I would love to have it but I would love it alot more if it was a proper dark green with tan interior.

If it looks like this, it’s a BMW and doesn’t have Lucas electrics:
If it looks like this, which I think yours does, it is not a BMW and may have Lucas electrics:

i got this translated from a friend from an old writeup I did in 2003
ECU, engine and electrical system on the BMW version were all shot from a flood. So it had a salvage title and my dad had a rusty one like the bottom one and swapped and spliced in the old austin mini cooper stuff into my grandmother’s salvage BMW mini. It was tons and tons of work and no one believed it until they had seen it in person! Much slower and less reliable but 1 of a kind!
hopefull this clears it up

If it weren’t all the way on the other side of the country, I’d be buying it right now.

I like the color - I normally think these look best dark, but that gunmetal blue really works. US-spec chrome trim helps, RoW got black window trim which looks silly with pale colors.
I vote NP at any price.
I loved mine

Damn, I’m developing a thing for Jags, and this isn’t helping.

I remember someone buying a 4.0l XK and the engine self-destructing within a couple of thousand miles.
I also remember that he took a couple of bits apart and found the valve covers filled with either sand or ground glass, can’t remember which.
He suspected sabotage from an ex-housemate.

terrible price for that thing. should be somewhere around 6-7 IMHO, ones approaching 100K run for 2-3 grand these days in real life

It’s not a Ford, it’s a Jaguar with some Ford switches, which are pretty shitty in and of themselves.
But, it is pretty.

Crappy switchgear, crappy plastics, gauge cluster that looks like it came from a penalty box, and a dimwitted auto gearbox keep them from being great.
But they are gorgeous cars, I will always love these things, if from afar.
