can someone please explain to me how can this car, a 1997 Daewoo Leganza, corner faster and better than a 2006 VW Passat? as far as stats go, the Leganza has an american suspension, it’s like riding on a magic carpet, but rolls like hell while the Passat has a really hard suspension. Also, the Laganza is 16 cm high (6.4 inches) while the Passat sits at 4.8. The Passat is diesel, 4 motion, while the Leganza is running on petrol, just fwd, both have 2 liter engines. I know the Passat is a bit heavier, but it took me by surprise. I DD the Leganza and I have classes about 60 miles away and a few hills to cross, I’m used to do 70-75 mph in certain bends and today I took my father’s Passat and at 70 mph the wheels were screeching as hell. Both have top notch tires so I’m not taking that into account. Why isn’t the Passat better?! I’m disappointed...

It’s because ze Germans are riding on their laurels, whereas Daewoo has something to prove.

It corners faster because it’s less unreliable. The Passat can’t corner at any speed if it won’t even start :(
The Leganza is nice, but it’s no Magnus (Epica/Verona) which has an I6 :)

not sure why you are discounting the tyres as even if they both are top notch the differences still can be huge other than that, weight can play a big part in handling also the weight distribution

Probably just a matter of the Passat being setup with more safety-understeer

Because, despite what people say, the Germans aren’t the best at making cars

it’s the european version. 2.0 liters, 4 cylinders 133 hp

both are pretty front heavy

weight, tire width, suspension geometry, TIRE PRESSURES is HUGE

can confirm, the Leganza needed a new water pump after 8 years and it’s still going strong to this day, while the Passat breaks down once every 2 years. Turbo went kaput, injectors, fuel pump, headlights, camshaft, everything...

same tire width, the Passat has the harder suspension while the Leganza has an american barge suspension, also the Passat is lower. Tire pressure is 2.5 on the Passat, 2.2 on the Leganza. the Leganza has smaller rims, but the tires have a higher wall...

well it’s approx 150kg heavier so that goes against it’s handling and diesel engines are normally more heavier than petrol so there is the extra forward weight distribution on the passat

It may be that being lighter with soft suspension, the Leganza is shifting a lot of weight to the outside, and you’re losing some traction through transitional slip in the tall sidewall *but* staying on grip on the outer tires because they have more than enough grip with the weight shift to stay pinned... while the Passat is keeping weight-balanced but is so heavy with such minimal sidewalls that when it stays level, it snaps out of traction everywhere at once. It sounds like the Passat could *in theory* corner better, but only if its suspension were tuned and you spent eleventy gajillion dollars on tires. Softer suspension almost always means more fucked up handling, but there are exceptions. For an extreme one, the 2CV:
They’re total garbage at staying level, but can hold onto corners really really well... unless the tires slip on the driver’s terrified pee.

I SWEAR that that’s how it feels inside, it just rolls and rolls and there’s a lot of ass clenching going on in there and you expect a loud SCREEEECH and a BANG, but that thing is amazing. Also, it likes an agressive driving style, when you pull the wheel, you pull it hard, while the others like it smooth, if you do those sort of things in others cars you understeer like crazy. Also, the fwd Leganza oversteers on dirt roads, a feat I can’t explain using physics.

Forgetful’s point was also true - that a lot of cars are deliberately meant to understeer to scare you and make the car lose control gradually rather than oversteer unto death. It’s possible (actually, likely) your Leganza has a very well designed set of camber changes in front that keep the tires planted and the design gives a great big middle finger to the idea of understeer on purpose. That means your tires dig in on the dirt road up front, a feat which your rear setup can’t quite match with less weight.
