What is your definition of a "truck"? What are the minimum requirements for the acceptable use of the term? I wont advocate a right or wrong answer, but I am curious as to how people define the term.

Subaru Brat - not a truck

Honda Ridgeline - a truck (see bed rule above)

It is beefed up significantly, but it IS a platform mate to the Accord.

I use it colloquially to refer pretty broadly to:

- Pickups, including cars with beds.

- Body-on-Frame vehicles, including SUVs and full size vans.

- Largish 4WD cars with off-road chops like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Land Cruiser, Nissan Pathfinder. However I would never refer to a Jeep Wrangler as a "truck", unless maybe it was the one with the bed.

- Semi trucks, most commercial vehicles.

We don't have kei trucks in the USA, but we do have Gators with beds. If you get one street legal, than I guess it's a truck too.

Well, I guess. We just call them pickups here though. Our word for truck is lastebil (car that can carry loads/goods), and we only use that if the car have a total weight of more than 3,5 metric tons. Personally I usually use the words Lorry or HGV when I talk about large/heavy vehicles in English.

I don't think we can agree on a simple term here, because it's not just about opinions, but about language and cultural differences as well :)

call it what you want on the lot, it is what it does every day that makes it a truck.

Case in point - in Maine we have an exemption for "Fish Trucks" which is defined as a vehicle used for the purpose of delivering fish or lobster from the boat to the market, and to get your salty ass home at night. My girls dad - yeah he has used a damn Chevy Sprint as one. Even said FISH TRUCK - BAR HARBOR on the side :)

So the Ridgeline cannot be a truck if it's parts can be used to make other things that are not trucks? Because that means the F150, Silverado, and Dodge Ram are not trucks, as they all share parts with (respectively) the Expedition/Navigator, the Tahoe/Yukon/Esclade, and the Durango/Aspen. Actually, that excludes all their major competitors too, like the Titan (Pathfinder Armada/Infiniti equivalent) and the Tundra (Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Lexus equivalent)

If you choose to define it that way. My comment was aimed at the fact that the Honda Midsized Global platform is the base platform for the accord and the ridgeline. So now that I have you in the corner (i do, right?) can I ask you to identify what a truck is? (not what it is not)

Kinja'd!!! RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht > HammerheadFistpunch
04/15/2015 at 17:38

Kinja'd!!!2

I'd define it as a combined set rather than an intersection or exclusionary set. The set of real or simulated BOF-based vehicles with (usually) RWD-based drivetrain and a primary purpose of cargo for the base vehicle(usually) and not a van, combined with vehicles that have a bed.

Astro or Econoline (or Transit): would be a truck, if it weren't a van (single box body format).

Honda Pilot or new Explorer: marginal cases, probably not, because rather than starting from a cargo vehicle basis adapted for passenger moving, they're a really mutant minivan that simulates a truck. Too many strikes.

Honda Ridgeline: grudgingly, a truck. It *does* have a bed, though it's trending ute. Some wouldn't call utes a truck, I say let them in because they're a closer *functional* match than most SUVs are, even truck-based ones.

Ford Explorer (old version): A truck, because even with adaptation, the BOF setup, the drivetrain, and relatedness to a Ranger make it unequivocal.

Hummer (any): Trucks. Classic truck platform of chassis plus longitudinal engined drive of rear wheels outweighs more marginal "cargo" comparison, at least for the H1 and its not-based-on-anything platform.

El Camino: Truck, particularly due to retained BOF. However, silly.

Holden Maloo: Unibody, but still has a pickup bed. Just like a Subaru Baja, grudgingly a truck. If "shares platform with a wagon" were enough to disqualify things alone, then the classic Willys wagon trucks wouldn't count either.

Jeep Comanche: truck. As is the Cherokee up until recently - drivetrain, *structural similarity* if not actual BOF, and so on.

VW Caddy: even this, a truck, otherwise we start excluding other FWD joke-trucks, and if a Citroen 2CV Fourgonette isn't a truck, what in the hell is it?

SUV=/=Truck, but there are other trucks than just pickups. The Daihatsu Hijet is a truck, Transports are trucks, a pallet cart is a truck, but if it's intended to carry people it's either a van or an SUV.

I think it's possible to have an Ur-Truck category without saying other things aren't trucks, but I think it's also possible to say a PT Cruiser being a "truck" is utter horseshit. FTR: an Ur-Truck would be straight rear axle, bed, RWD or 4WD, BOF. Anything less is a dimunition, but not necessarily not a truck. A ute is a step-child - some foreign genes/parentage in the mix, but part of the family and definitely related. A truck-SUV is the nephew, a unibody delivery truck is the black sheep (and may be outright adopted - but nobody is rude enough to ask). However, what matters is who is in the family, and who isn't.
