Welcome back to the weekly series where we look back at fine automobiles of years ending in 2. Believe or not it has been 11 weeks and 100 years of this series.
This year we enter 1992. After being released of the horrible designs of the 1980s, automakers began to get curvier with their cars. However, this week we are not going to talk about a curvy car. No instead we are going to talk about one of the best performance SUV's to ever come out.
The GMC Typhoon, which was the SUV brother of the Syclone, began production in 1992. Based on the GMC Jimmy of the time the Typhoon offered a 4.3L turbo charge V6 engine which when matched with its 4 speed automatic transmission gave it a 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph (governed). At the time, the Typhoon rivaled the Ferrari's and Corvettes of that era in performance, but it could also carry 2x4's home from Home Depot with ease.
Outside of the copious cargo space (for a performance vehicle), the interior wasn't very special. Rough cheap plastics, which GM has become known for, dominated the interior. However, this is a vehicle about performance. It isn't about comfort and practicality, you can't even tow anything with it.
One of the other performance aspects of the Typhoon was its all-wheel drive configuration. The 35F and 65R split of the drivetrain allowed for RWD hoonage with a little bit of FWD handling assistance. There were 4697 Typhoons produced between 1992 and 1993. The Typhoon had an MSRP of $29,970 or about the price of an EcoBoost Fusion. This may not seem like a lot now, but when adjusted for inflation that is $51,032.02. Wow inflation has gotten bad.
The Typhoon is one of the last in the category of performance SUV's, which is now dominated by the Grand Cherokee SRT8.
1992 had some fantastic vehicles debut. I am not going to go through them all because I want you, Opponauts, to go out and find them. However, if you miss some, I will slap you!
So Oppo, what other cars from 1992 can you find?

Acura Integra GS-R
(This body style had been out for a couple years already but the GS-R was new for '92. I had one.)

The 944 S2 also has a 3 liter 4 banger.
(Same basic motor as the 968 but without the VarioCam variable valve timing for 208 hp instead of 236 in the 968.)

I am surprised you all have missed one of the more significant Jalop cars.
Here's a hint. Some of it is in this van.
