My step-brother is in his fourth week of chemo for bowel cancer. He hasn't taken well to one to the drugs and had a shunt put in last week into his heart.

The hospital had done tests on his blood or something three months back when he was taken in for appendicitis (which they removed) and took them seven weeks to tell him they suspect he had cancer (a suit from the hospital went round to see him and tell him and also to apologise on behalf of the hospital). He originally was upbeat and wanted to go through with what was needed and then take on the hospital for not telling him and getting things done sooner but recently he's experienced a degree of pain and 'can't be done with it anymore'. His nurse has told him some experience discomfort at first, then as treatment continues it eases off but we don't know how it's going to go till he gets there.

I don't see or spend much time with my step-brother (were very different people and never really got on) but my step-father has had to have words a few times to calm him down.

I don't know what I'd do if it was me and don't exactly know how he's doing other than from what my mother and step-father are saying but I do know, cancer sucks big time.

Well done to your friend for seeing it through. It's one of the several things I never want to experience first hand and can appreciate it takes a lot of hard work and determination to get through it.
