This is exactly why you don't swerve to avoid an animal. It's better to just hit the animal than to lose control of your vehicle and cause even more damage.

Yea, that was one of the first things my dad insisted upon when I started driving. Luckily we don't have hedgehogs roaming wild in North America.

My mom almost died after riding with someone who swerved to miss a squirrel.

The only reason to swerve is if your car has the handling characteristics of a prototype racecar.

deer are trickier. They can fuck you and your car up. Avoid safely if possible.

I know for a fact that most modern cars are designed to mostly withstand impacts with large woodland animals. Deer aren't as big a threat as Elk, and even then, it isn't wise to swerve. Just brake as much as you can.
