Yesterday I went to the Edmonton Auto Show and was perusing around like I normally do until I came to the Land Rover booth. I saw this SUV that I had no idea what it was. How can it be that I've never heard of the Discovery Sport until today? The car itself is quite nice. Nice enough that I wanted more info on it. So I go look at the price...ONLY 41 GRAND???? How the hell can it be? That is 7K less than the much smaller Evoque. A 4WD TURBO CHARGED LEATHER CLAD LAND ROVER FOR 41K CAD???
I finally got home from the show and hopped right on youtube to watch reviews and they were all pretty positive. I went on the configurator and specked one out exactly like I would want it and it was just under 45K CAD. So for the Price of a Ford Escape Titanium I can get a much better looking, much more capable Land Rover. Count me in!

I gotta say — you have the most diverse taste in vehicles on here!

That is correct! I literally like everything. Land yacht to kei cars, I love everything with 4 wheels and a motor.
If something is a great value I'm all for it.

At today's exchange rate (according to xe.com) $41,000 CAD is $32,578 USD.
In the US, the Discovery Sport starts at $37,070.
The US dollar has been on a bit of a gaining trend lately so at the moment, prices in other currencies seem particularly cheap when converted to USD.
Except when looking at UK pounds.
In the UK the Discovery Sport starts at £32,395 GBP which is $47,671 USD.
Ah, currency exchange rates.

This is the first I'm learning of the Discovery Sport. It looks like it's replacing the LR2 (Freelander). I also didn't realize that Land Rover has been using the Ford EcoBoost 2.0 for some applications, which will also include the first year of the Discovery Sport. However, it looks like Land Rover is working on a new engine family, named Ingenium .
On a somewhat related note; why are we getting this new model as the Discovery Sport while the Discovery is sold over here as the LR4?

hum. Thats a good thing then since it means my money is worth a bit more than I thought. Just last week the exchange was 30% it looks like it is now 25%. That is still an extremely good value for money don't you think?
I can buy this for $32578.18 USD. I'm starting to think cars are cheaper in Canada.
Challenger hellcat is $69,999 CAD = ONLY $55614.13 USD

I do too!

I like all kinds of vehicles as well, yet somehow I always end up with something Japanese...

I agree on all counts. But really why did they ever change the name from Discovery to LR4? It makes not much sense. The discovery name was well known for its offroading pedigree because of the Camel Trophy so why would you let that historic name die?

My heart is truly JDM. the Skyline family will always be my favorite cars on the planet. but since we can get what I love(unless I import one) then I have no choice but to branch out to other stuff.

Cars are priced in different countries based on a lot more than just exchange rates. Saying "wow cars are so cheap" because of exchange rates isn't really a fair gauge of the price of cars.
Right now the US dollar is worth more against the Canadian dollar than it has been in the past. So the more accurate way to describe it would be "a person with US dollars buying a car in Canadian dollars would get a good deal right now."
But you don't have US dollars. ;)

It makes sense. I guess I was thinking about it backwards. But still 41K is a great price for this.

Prices in the UK include taxes (I'm not sure if you pay much tax on cars in the US?), it's 20% here, and our base models tend to be higher spec too. Things are just more expensive here though.

I think the original Discovery/LR4 name will eventually be dropped in favour of Land Rover's upcoming three piece lineup - Defender, Discovery and Range Rover, with each having its own individual characteristics and trim levels. With Range Rover, that's the Sport, SVR, Evoque etc. The first Discovery is the Sport as seen above and will be followed by others. Finally, the new Defender will finish the trio, also with its own trim levels.
I should write Land Rover's press releases...

I was under the impression (from European Car mag) that the Discover would start around $37k USD in the 'States. Looking at their site it's true. I spec'd out a Sport with the stereo, leather, and climate package for around $43k. Not bad for a great off-road capable machine.

You think the Asian college kids that buy LR4s care about Camel Trophy? Or really, anyone who buys them?

Sales taxes on cars aren't included in the prices here in the US because tax rates vary by state.
I'm in Wisconsin where sales tax (basically like your VAT) is 5.5%. But that's because my city tacks on an extra 0.5% and the rest of the state only pays 5%.

I don't know if it's true, but the sense I've gotten is that the Discovery name accrued many more negatives among the general public for reliability than it did positives with enthusiasts. So while offroading fans liked the "Discovery" name, the US market ditched it to shed off images of poor interior quality and so on.

They kind of have the same thing going on right now, but it's only 2 piece. Range Rovers and LRs.

I suppose that would make sense. This would be the type of vehicle you lease and in 3-4 years before the warranty is up you give it back. At a 41K starting price I imagine the lease payments will be VERY attractive.
Unless you have Carmax(insert Doug joke here) you never BUY a Land Rover.

I kinda like the Disco Sport. I mean people need to get it out of their heads that this is a replacement for the discovery...cause its not...but I think its a great sized, reasonably priced and capable little thing, and it looks great. I hear to wait for the ingenium engines though.

This, exactly.

It is a very compelling vehicle that just came out recently.
If it turns out to be reliable, I could certainly consider it, as well.

I'd pony up for the third row and the cold climate pack, and still have it under $45k Canadian.

For a Luxury SUV that's a freaking bargain. Can't wait to see what type of lease deals can be had for this.
![]() 04/10/2015 at 14:58 |

Definitely a bargain. How have their reliability ratings been of late? Resale value tends to be crap for the LR brand too though - so might be an even better buy used after a few years, esp. after we have a little more info about how these things hold up?

I know. Even though I'll never be able to afford one, I can still dream. For now, I'll keep fixing my Cutlass.

Are you sure about the third row? Checked out a Disco Sport recently - it's tight, even for kids!

Yeah, but it sure is convenient.
