Customer clips a garbage bin, damaging the fender and puncturing the tire. Roadside Assistance shows up and puts the donut on the drive wheel. Facepalm. Why? Because it was raining, and Roadside sometimes has no fucks to give.

I suppose I didn't have any fucks to give either, because when I showed up to take this vehicle, a Volvo XC60, back to our distribution facility, I wasn't really inclined to swap the wheels in the rain either. The XC60 rides on 18's, I think, and the donut was a 14". As such it was standing like a pirate with a too-short peg leg. Odd that Volvo didn't choose to include a full-size spare. I suppose this is just one of many compromises that go into building a crossover utility vehicle.

So off I went, in the rain, at the tail end of rush-hour, counter-steering all the way. The handling was so off, it was possible to almost make a 90 degree left-turn just by torque steering.

It will get you to tire store or dealership to solve the issue. It's not supposed to be a complete replacement. Most Volvos have that compressor and can of sealing liquid. Lexus for example has donuts but are the same radius of a full size. They are legally called full size spares. And that's all they are, a spare to get you to a place to solve a problem.

I think the main issue was not moving the spare to the rear of the car, which can cause stability issues if you don't.

I'm just impressed that the car actually has a spare!

Most all new Volvos have the fix a flat gel and you have to pay a nice premium for the donut.

Volvo doesn't like full-size spares. Even if it means them making quite possibly the stupidest looking donut because brake caliber.

it'll be fine as long as your not hauling ass around corners :] As long as you can drive it. If it's raining like Dunnik said, just take a little more caution is all. A donut will not cause you to drive into a wall during a quick trip to a tire center or dealership.

It was a she, and it's a fleet vehicle, so basically ordered sight-unseen.

Agreed, though, color looks pretty good on it.

Yep, well, I'm here to write about it, and the vehicle is now safe and sound at our shop, so indeed, if you know what you're in for and take it easy, it's not a big deal.

Occasionally it would, however, suddenly and randomly pull sharply to the left on a straight road, and while driving in the inside lane (left-side drive tire, road cants upwards for drainage).
