Here's the problem when you own a house, you live alone in there, and having 2 not very sporting cars and no ladies or kids inside: boredom. And now i'm thinking about Sport Exhaust.

Kinja'd!!!

I once drove a Porsche Panamera S, and it has that button that make exhaust go louder when you press it. I think it's pretty simple, it's like opening a flaps inside the exhaust or something. But the problem was, i want a similar system in my Lexus. Basically I'm going to put straight pipe in it, but I didn't want my Lexus to sound mental everyday. How hard can it be?

My idea was to make a hole on the exhaust system just outside the catalytic converter, where the flaps could close the hole when I didn't want it, and opens the hole and redirect the exhaust gas there when I want some noise. Pretty simple, but I'm not sure if that will work or will sound as nice as the real LS400 with straight pipes. Any better ideas?

They're called cutouts. Popular on old muscle cars but you can put them in anything.

Sports exhaust buttons just open valves inside the muffler. What you would want are electric cutouts. They sound great, and work exactly as you describe, but at the flick of a switch.

Start with these:

Just make sure you route the straight pipe section of exhaust away from any fuel lines, or brake lines, or drive-train components that shouldn't be getting warm.

I have seen someone who mocked up a straight pipe to exit out the right side of their bumper, and a regular muffled exhaust out he left. When opened the straight pipe got to play, when closed it was jsut the factory exhaust. best part was they made both tips look the same so from the outside it looked like just a regular dual exhaust.

Yeah.

That's pretty much summarize my idea, actually. Now i need to learn how to route the switch to one of my blank buttons inside the car and have an actual sport button!

Kind of "eh" on quality from my experience, though.

Yes of course. I don't want my Lexus to be a Ferrari.

I would love to do that, but since i'm planning all my cars should be a Sleeper* i think i will keep the straight one hidden inside the car.

*And yes, that includes my Elgrand. Sleeper JDM Minivan FTW!

I have the poor mans version on my car now. Just the cut outs, not electric. But it takes all of 3 minutes to bolt the cover on and only $100 ($45 for the cut out, $50 installed).

Kinja'd!!!

Also as someone who had a SC400 with straight pipes, you want dem 1UZ noises in your life.

If its the same exhaust set up as the SC, put the cutout after the cat and before the resonators and it will sound the same.

Well, ability..

I went to the same "Manual Labors and Practicality" class with some of the most practical man in the world like Jeremy Clarkson, so i guess you should doubt it.

So..

How does the one in your car works?

Yeah, i think the LS400 has similar setup, only i think the one in LS400 is longer. And that 1UZ noise with straight pipe, it's just amazing.

Lol funny you mention that, my car actually came with such a setup, but no button. Flaps were open at idle, two of the four close between idle and 3500, and above 3500 RPM they open back up. Last night I pulled the fuse to leave it on loud all the time.

Kinja'd!!!

I have to jack the car up and bolt the cover back on. Not a problem for me because I leave it open 99% of the time (I've only out the cover plate back on once).
