And go!
Any useful information would be appreciated. Anybody own/have experience with one?

My neighbour has a Turbo.
It's really fucking loud.
I hate the 996 Turbo.

Noted.

A rousing endorsement if I ever heard one

Four wheels. Engine. German. That's about it.

IMS. Maintenance. Oil leaks.
So much poon.
I love the 996 too.

996 turbos are great performance bargains. Lots of car for your dollar.

Intermediate Shaft Bearing failures on the non-turbo models. It's a thing and yes, it will happen.
Also, my d-bag neighbor has a 996 cabrio, it broke, and now it's an expensive sidewalk decoration.

Tell him that some random guy offers him a box of Krispy Kremes for it.

IMS bearing. IMS bearing.
IMotherfuckingS bearing.
Intermediate Shaft bearing.
Look it up and rethink it.
-Signed someone who really wants a 996.

IMS, bro. Find one with service records and make sure that's done.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 21:10 |

I think the engine's in the back.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 21:10 |

Huh, Rusto told me that K-Roll said that the IMS bearing wasn't an issue on the earlier models.
Either way, I'll look out for that.

That or the timing chain on a B6 S4. CHOOSE.

interesting development if I say so myself.

Nah, he needs his broken 996, used W140, and his girlfriend's used ML to show the neighborhood how "wealthy" he is even though he still lives at home.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 21:14 |

Bwaha, I love cars that make you seem wealthy.
Like everybody thinks I'm well set because I drive a 1997 A4. JOKES ON YOU, IT COST $2,500.

For the same kinda money as a Turbo you could have a 500hp 8.0 liter fire breathing monster. Enter Dodge Viper

IMS. Every time. Because at the end of the day, even when the engine is disassembled, I'd still own a 911, and not a steroid enhanced A4.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 21:23 |
|
Hey if you have a few grand ready for maintence there is nothing wrong with owning a Porsche
![]() 04/04/2015 at 21:26 |
|
The S4 would be more practical and 4.2 V8.
The 911 would be more flashy, but not as practical.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 21:28 |

I've always got some money set aside for unexpected repairs. After all, I've only owned VAG products.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 21:32 |

Maybe, but with the 911 you get to use the word frunk. And there's so many variants that you could have a year round practical Carrera 4 or a super fast and practical Turbo.

S5

Huehue, that's an Rs5.

Are you full on shopping? You were talking about Mustangs earlier.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 22:11 |
|
I don't even know what I'm thinking of myself.
Here's a list of what I'm vaguely looking for in no particular order.
A5, manual.
B6 S4, manual.
996 911, manual but less preference.
Mustang GT, 2007+ (Probably less so)
Base Camaro, (Slooooow)
B7 A4 Avant, manual.
I went super 'Murica mode after driving a '15 Camaro RS. Then that died down a bit.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 22:29 |
|
I felt like that after I drove m father in laws XLR-V. I just think Europeans do cars better. Now if I was buying a pick up 'Murica all the way. Do you need the space of a wagon or a sedan? It's not like you're packing dogs or kids or something.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 22:34 |
|
I don't even know what happened, I just was overwhelmed with "This car is so American" that I wanted one.
I honestly also agree with you, Europeans are the best at making cars. They tend to over engineer sometimes, but besides that I can't get enough.
Also, I don't have kids or a dog to worry about so even more reason to Porsche! Having four seats would also be useful so it wouldn't be a completely dysfunctional car.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 22:39 |

Just buy a FiST and get it over with. ha ha jk
![]() 04/04/2015 at 22:42 |
|
I'm done with wanting one of those, haha.
Like, how would you want this to go?
Co worker 1: What kind of car to you drive.
Coworker 2: Uhhhhhh, a Ford Fiesta. BUT IT'S FASTER.
Co worker 3: I drive a Porsche 911.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 22:51 |
|
While the RS has my attention and I will be watching it much like the Golf R I can't imagine taking a client out to lunch and saying "hop in my FiST"
![]() 04/04/2015 at 22:53 |
|
Hahahaha, "My FiST is in the garage, let me pull it out."
![]() 04/04/2015 at 22:55 |

Have you seen the interior?
![]() 04/04/2015 at 23:22 |
|
I don't make enough money to see the inside of one of those.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 23:25 |
|
All I can tell you is a 2000 Carrera was the first "fast" car I ever drove. The interior was pretty crappy but the driving dynamics were out of this world.
If you're even remotely considering ownership, ensure you're well versed on the IMS issue (I am not).
![]() 04/04/2015 at 23:26 |
|
Sorry I was trying to reply to the OP. It may make you feel better though if you look at the interior, you'd realize you're not missing out on anything.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 23:29 |
|
Thanks for the tips, I do have to admit that the interior is sub par. But I'm sure, as you said that the driving expirience would be great.
![]() 04/04/2015 at 23:45 |

Yeah, it was definitely a highlight in young TFen's life.
Years later when I had the E46 I'd goto used car lots that specialized in lightly used high end cars and take them for test drives lol. I got to drive some pretty cool cars that that way. You mentioned you had an A4, you should give it a try.
Anyways, I've driven some pretty cool metal, but the 911 still, in my opinion, is the most engaging ride. And this is coming from a Corvette guy.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 08:37 |
|
Then I think you should go for it.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 08:40 |
|
As do I. But that particular one is on the wrong side of the country.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 08:42 |
|
The oppertunity will come around if you are patient enough. That's the beauty of a 911 they are rare but then again they aren't.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 08:43 |
|
Awesome, haha. It's on my list for sure.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 08:45 |
|
Spot on, the only thing I'm a bit worried about is the false impression that I'm wealthy.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 08:48 |
|
You don't drive a car though for the other people you drive it for yourself. And if it makes you happy it shouldn't really matter
![]() 04/05/2015 at 08:51 |
|
I know, I just don't want to be known as "the douchecanoe with the Porsche."
![]() 04/05/2015 at 09:09 |
|
I don't think Doug was the douchecanoe with the Ferrari. Just gotta address the problem the right way. Like at a gas station talk to people or talk badly about your car so people don't think you are better than them.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 09:16 |
|
Haha, I'd also like to modify the car to make it look newer. But if somebody asked me for the cost, I'd tell them that it wasn't expensive at all.
![]() 04/05/2015 at 09:30 |
|
Yeah there is no reason to lie to people
![]() 04/05/2015 at 09:32 |
|
I won't be that guy that's like "YEAH IT COST ME $765665654654654 AND THE BITCHES LOVE ME"
![]() 04/05/2015 at 09:35 |
|
WAIT! BITCHES DONT LOVE YOU IN A 911?
![]() 04/05/2015 at 09:41 |

ONLY THE ONES YOU STUFF IN THE FRUNKK HGNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
![]() 04/05/2015 at 21:24 |

No not that it wasn't an issue. He said that it was less likely to be an issue.
Also IMS is not a problem until it is. So you can buy a car that hasn't had the work done for cheap and then fix the car so it won't happen. I think it's $2000 max to have it done on the 996. So find a car for at least $1000 under market value and put the savings towards the fix.
Also K Roll said that IMS is easier to fix on the 996 than the 997.1.
![]() 04/06/2015 at 18:42 |
|
I said it wasn't as much of an issue. It's still there in all '99-08 911s, just in varying levels of severity. The '99-01 cars have the lowest failure rates. The '99-early 05 997 models don't need to have their engines fully disassembled to replace the bearing; late '05-08 cars do. But there's a catch I forgot to mention. If a car of any of those years has already had an IMS failure and it's engine replaced, the new engine will most likely have the bearing that can only be removed by engine disassembly.
