I am moving about 400 miles away in less than 2 months, and thought this would be the perfect time to try. Behind the engine in the 4Runner, the exhaust manifolds combine to drop down, which makes a bit of a shelf. Would that be too hot? Tell me of your experiences.

I've baked potatoes and cooked steak on engines.. but 400 miles seems WAY to far though..

I think I drove about 50 miles or so with the old Simca, and the steak (1" thick t-bone) was done, perhaps a bit overcooked really.

I didn't elaborate enough, I didn't plan on cooking it the entire trip, I figured in between fill-ups, but that even sounds too far. But that doesn't sound too bad.

Steak as close to the exhaust as possible, veggies and taters somewhere else, that way you can sorta control how hot it gets.. heh.. It all depends on how hot the engine gets though.

There was many a day when I used to heat my lunch on the intake of my backhoe. This was never raw food tho, this was just a can of Ravioli or Spaghetti-os. Or sometimes chicken soup.

The intake manifold of the Ford 555B backhoe had a nice even low temp running digging ops or idling. Doing loader stuff was too jerky and I would lose my lunch, but not in the terrible way, just in the 'oh, there it goes into that mud puddle' way.

This spot on the intake was not hot enough to cook but perfect for warming. I would nestle my can of lunch in there about thirty minutes before noon and had a nice hot lunch every time.

Tips:

1) Take the paper label off — never caught one on fire but it will smell bad.

2) Do not try this with a microwave plastic tub ravioli! It might work, but it probably won't smell good either. You want something in a real can.

3) If your co-workers are really big and mean, make sure you have a plan to get them lunch pronto because about 20 minutes in that Ravioli is going to smell SO GOOD! And there is not enough to share.

That's the thing with mine, I could probably cook eggs on the hood during winter, so I'd have to check the meat every 15 minutes or so.

I haven't seen it actually! I have seen the Mythbuster's episode where they cook an entire Thanksgiving dinner in a Cadillac.

Neat, I hadn't seen that one. With Alton Brown doing the cooking no wonder it went better than Top Gear. Could not find the entire vid tho, just the last bit (embedded for those reading along).

You should take some photos and write a post about this adventure if you decide to cook something. I guess the trick to it is just sealing the food pretty good and finding the right spot to get the right temperature. Beef seems like a good choice. A sirloin tip roast might work well.

It's been a few years, here's my most successful Car cooker recipe

When I had my 96 Ram (5.2L) it took around 32-35 miles at 70 mph to bring two bacon wrapped 8oz Filet Mignon to Medium Rare. Double Foil wrapped with a shot of Olive Erl, chopped Garlic and a pinch of salt.

If you wanted Potatoes with that you'd have to set them up about 25 miles before the Steaks. Use the little "Yukon Gold" taters with Butter and triple wrap them.

Everything was manipulated to sit on or very near the exhaust manifold.

It worked very well on I88 and I355 in Illinois. You could pull over after the Toll Booths and check things.

I have tried. It was '62 Ford fire truck that my friend had. It had 289 cid engine with headers. The headers overcooked sausage in a minute. I haven't tried engine cooking since.

Back when I was a (literally) starving commuting college student, I stopped in at a supermarket before my one hour, thirty minute drive home. I bought a box of individually wrapped corn dogs. I tossed two on the defroster grille of my '95 Chevy Monte Carlo, cranked the heat and let it cook. By the time I got to my exit to get off the highway, they were both just as warm as if I'd nuked them in the microwave.
