Now that I'll be living 4.5 miles away from work, I'm trading in my TDI for a late-model Town Car, which will be built up over time as Project Hot Rod Lincoln. I ran across a 2008 TC at Carmax with 5k miles on it. While buying an essentially new 7 year old car sounds great, what kind of problems could one expect from a car that's been driven so little?

Link?
No major issues, I bet. I've driven Panthers that have been sitting for YEARS and they start right up after a battery jump.
FWIW I think 2008 is the best of the "recent" Panthers, so good job there. You'll be fine with just new fluids and some intake cleaner, thigh you may wish to replace the fuel filter just for cheap insurance (in the event it's been sitting for a while).
Why so few miles?

Dried out seals, wear on the engine components (assuming only short trips), etc. Probably needs all the fluids changed since they've been in there so long.

it depends on if the car was driven in increments to 5K, or 5K was put on it and it sat. A car that was used to get groceries on a weekly basis and was serviced is better than one that sat

So basically you will be boating to work every day. Not all your coworkers can say that!

Who cares? Carmax warranty.

2008? You'll be fine. Shouldn't be anything major. Change all the fluids when you get it and take a look around at any rubber components, but I wouldn't expect to find much if anything awful.

No idea, they don't give the car's history on their site. These cars have airbag rear suspension; I'd guess that would be the first thing to go. They want 20k for it, which is 4k over retail. If I do got the Carmax route, I'd def get the warranty but don't want to be bringing the car back every 3 months to fix broken shit.

Sure, but don't want to bring the car back every 3 months to fix broken stuff.

Change the fluids, and you'll probably be golden.

Will have to find a NYC Yacht Club bumper sticker for it

That would be hilarious.

Nah, the air suspension is pretty stout. It should last at least to 75k miles. ;)
Save yourself the CarMax warranty and join CVN instead: www.crownvic.net. Everything you could ever want to know about fixing everything.
Also $20k is way, way too much IMO. If you really want an LTC, you may be better off finding a slightly higher mileage one from not-CarMax. 04 and 08 are the best years, says me.

Son, you're gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Lincoln.

Exactly the song I had in mind.

I'm on a few TC and Panther sites & FB pages. No doubt, that car is overpriced by 4k according to KBB. I've found many others with low miles; the benefit of buying a meme & pepe car : )
The warranty is important to me because even though I do a lot of work on my cars I want the expensive stuff breaking to be covered.
