Every time a new generation of full size pickup trucks is launched the automakers always make a big show about how they are thinking about the working man with their new bigger volume and temperature knobs.
This stuff is nice, I guess, but hardly has me running to the dealership.
I’d love to see a manufacturer integrate a roof rack, where I could put lumber and steel without worrying about scratching up my roof. Almost everyone in the trades slaps a back rack on their truck, why not capitalize on that? The Ford Atlast concept had something similar, but surprisingly it never made it to the final production truck.
Similarly I wish a manufacturer would come out with a beefed up tail gate that was rated to support X amount of weight. I’ve seen many trucks with crumpled tailgates because someone stacked one too many 2x4s on them.
My last suggestion is a little more out there but I often find myself wishing my truck had a glove warmer. It wouldn’t cost much to do, just direct two air vents into the glove box or center console that I can slip my gloves onto when I’m not wearing them, and have it be selectable on the climate control panel. Nothing is better than warm toasty work gloves on a cold winter morning.
What about you guys? Any ideas?

I am not really a truck guy, but I have used them many times. It usually involves taking things and putting them in the truck bed, followed by taking them out of the bed after a drive of a variable length of time. It would be nice if they made the bed about two feet lower like a truck of 25 years ago so loading and unloading would be less work. But I suppose the truck wouldn't be seen as "macho" and it wouldn't sell.

Ya there definitely seems to be a trend towards higher beds, in some ways its nice because it makes taking stuff out easier if it's at chest height, but it doesn't help when you're loading things in.
Trucks today also have a lot more ground clearance, which is great if you're offroading and makes the truck look macho like you said, but doesn't really make them any more useful in everyday life for city folk like myself.

I want a basic stripper model. Give me whatever combination of cab/box I want.
I want rubber floors, clothes bench seats front and rear, the front bench seat having the middle fold down. Basic 6 speaker stereo that sounds good with a buttons only simple system.
I want to be able to spec the big engine in such a truck, with either 2wd or 4wd.
I want it with decent looking simple wheels that have decent tires on them. Give it a bed liner and a really good undercoating.
Give me an options list that includes bed tie downs, racking systems, and other useful stuff.
And since it's a stripper model get it under $30K

I do think your ideas for a roof rack and stronger gate are good ones. But what do I know, I will always be the guy that borrows the truck, not the guy that buys one, so they don't build them for me.
