You're going to be right in the middle of everything fun there. Also, it's not that far. If you are going to be there for a while, it might be worth it for you to buy a Japan Rail Pass . It might be worth your time + shinkansen!By the way, why are you going?

Get a day pass (or multi-day) on the Yamanote line. It goes in a big circle with trains arriving both directions like every 5 minutes. There's some line that goes straight from Harajuku to Akihabara as well...forget the name, but it's part of JR as well so you can get a whole network pass and it'd be a bit more direct..
