Of course Toyota is first to debut a mainstream hybrid CUV.

I've been wondering when the hell mainstream brands would bring hybrid variants of their CUVs (i.e. the Ford Escape) to market. The taillights and blue color on the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid in this pic look pretty spiffy; it would've been nice if this were around when my folks were shopping for a new car a couple years back.

It'll be interesting to see if the RAV4 Hybrid can be had with optional AWD (with a third electric motor in the rear) like the Lexus NX300h, and if the hybrid system actually makes a significant difference in MPG; the NX200t F Sport AWD is rated at 22 city/27 highway/24 combined, the regular RAV4 Limited AWD (which uses a different version of the NX300h's 2.5L ICE) gets 22/29/25, and the NX300h AWD gets 33/30/32. The RAV4 Hybrid will debut at the 2015 NYIAS, hopefully without an ugly front fascia. Also, I noticed that "Hybrid Synergy Drive" isn't on the badge, for some reason.

The Escape Hybrid had potential. The problem was that it didn't have styling that screamed "I'M SAVING THE PLANET BY DRIVING A HYBRID! LOOK AT ME DAMMIT!"

The first-generation Escape/Mariner Hybrid slipped my mind when I wrote this post, LOL. I was thinking about the current crop of CUVs.

I would hope that Toyota doesn't go too crazy, especially since the RAV4 isn't part of the Prius family.

i'd say a solid 10% of new york city yellow cabs are escape hybrids. they've nearly all been beaten into dust by now. but they became popular when incentives were given to medallion holders for using hybrids.
