My father in law has a bunch of old tires on the homestead and my wife wants to make some of these:
Now, my issue is that I will need to cut the tires and it's going to take a good, sturdy knife.
I thought maybe a diver's knife would be good because they're thick, heavy, stainless, and can stand up to multiple sharpenings. But I also don't want to spend A lot of money on something that'll be thrown away at the end of the project.
Oh, and she wants to start the project this afternoon. I've even talked her into letting me use her old hair dryer as a heat gun to soften the rubber. So do any oppos have a suggestion for a cheap knife that could be good for cutting tires? I don't want to burn up my jigsaw - it'll gum up all to hell anyway.

I can't imagine anything that is powered or serrated is going to do well as its going to tear up the edge. It looks like you are only cutting the sidewall so that shouldn't be too horrible. That said I think something like like a sharp singled bladed knife is going to be your best choice.
Your plan is to do something like this video right?

i can;t help with the knife but you should get a good pair of gloves. having 10 fingers is cool. 9 or 8 not as much.

Sharpen a shitty kitchen knife and heat it to make it cut through the rubber better.

I bet something like this would do it nicely:

I have a nice set of leather work gloves. They're thick enough to slow the blade significantly.
