He wants an A5. I asked him why he doesn't want an Acura, and he said they're "too boring."
I think I failed as a son. :/

dont see how...acura right now has all the excitement of a slightly tarted up honda.
in other words, none
+ the A5 is a dam fine car. good motors, aawesome trans options, REALLY nice interiors. he could do a hell of a lot worse.

An Audi is any better? Tarted up VWs...
Actually, remarkable how similar the four brands really are. Audi is the brand I love to hate and Acura the brand I hate to love.

hell yea audis better
one: AWD. which VW doesnt have
2: models VW doesnt have: what VW is the A5 based off of? VW doesnt have a comparable car
or the A6. or the A7. or the A8.
q3, q5, q7, a4 and 3, yea, they are on VW platforms. wtih WAY more options and possibility's.
Acura is kinda fuckled up for my because they sold the CSX here, which was LITERALLY a civic with leather and an acura badge and they had the gal to charge 5 grand more. there was literally not a SINGLE other difference.
(though I did like the third gen TLs)

The A5 is a sexy hunk of metal. It's hard to argue with it. The problem is Acura has abandoned coupes in the most hateful way possible. If it's 2 doors he's looking for, there's pretty much the A5, RC, 4 series, and ATS Coupe. Id let him try all 4.
![]() 03/26/2015 at 23:38 |

Comparing the 4 brands, Audi trumps them.

Eh, more models off the same platform is pretty meh, but:
Acura has AWD (or had last I checked)... Come to think of it I haven't checked in a while but The AWD SH package was great, AWD and 4 wheel steering on their V6 with an optional manual.
VW does sell AWD too...
The ILX was good, but they lost the manual, but a leathered up Si ain't bad.
And leather, if you really want it is worth $5k ish as a trim option on most brands...
My real problem is all Audis look the same. From spruced up Jetta to R8 they all just look bland. Not that Acura is any better there, but I think they generally look more aggressive than Audi.

He said he wanted an A5, then I introduced him to the RC. Either way, I get to drive one of them, and that makes my penis hard.

I'd disagree if for nothing else reliability and resale value.

A5/S5 is a nice choice. Get him to test an M4 or a 435i. Also gorgeous.

Honestly I can't think of a single Acura on the market right now that I'd actually buy with money, because none of them top their class. Or even come particularly close. Acura for me right now is the luxury Mitsubishi. Plus, if he wants a sporty-ish coupe like the A5, Acura doesn't currently make such a thing, unless you count a loaded Accord coupe.
![]() 03/26/2015 at 23:45 |

And the C or E Coupes. Yes, they still exist.
![]() 03/26/2015 at 23:45 |

His dad said Acura's are too boring, we are talking about driving dynamics here definitely not about reliability or resale, which with a German car is not boring but scary. But if it will be a lease none of that matters.
![]() 03/26/2015 at 23:45 |

they dropped the manuals entirly. none of their cars have it anymore. not the ILX, not the TLX.
VW doesnt sell AWD on their cars. the tiguan and touareg yes, but not the cars (golf R not with standing...)

New C coupe is about to be revealed soon, may have a lot of cues from the S coupe
And with the new interior in the C it's going to give the rest of the segment a run for its money.

No, no, I think he's right here. They're tarted-up Hondas.

That's a car! Also, didn't the Gold R have the better of the Quattros for a few years?

Lexi are tarted-up Toyotas, and Audis are tarted-up VWs.

I think they also had the most performance orenited one.
also, thats why i mentioned the golf R in particular. but at that price point, it really just is a slightly cheaper S3 hatch back with a (soon to be) manual.

Agreed! However an S5 is really a fantastic looking car inside and out, it's due for a refresh as it is quite old at this point. I mentioned below there is a new C coupe coming I would probably get that, but I drive a Merc so I'm biased.

What sorta budget does he have? An A5, or any luxury car, is significantly pricier than the Fit...
That said, I just want to remind you about the existence of the Q50. It's apparently quite more refined than the G37 and might be what someone older is looking for.
Test drive all of them!!!

What's wrong with the A5?
My mom has one and I love it. Seriously, it's a fantastic car: looks great inside and out, the interior is super nice, it drives quite nicely, MMI is a joy to use, the trunk is spacious, and the rear seats are totally useable.
I'd actually rank it pretty highly among cars I've driven, and I've driven a ton of cars. Granted it's the only car in its class I've driven, but I think it's great.
One last note: we can't expect people around us to adhere to our wants and tastes in cars. But I think a true enthusiast can see cars from other people's perspectives and make a recommendation for them. The A5 fits in that category: would I want one as an enthusiast? Eh, not particularly. I wouldn't get one unless it was an S or RS and even then there are other cars I'd prefer for the money. That being said the A5 is a perfect recommendation for my mom: it's reasonably fun but very luxurious with easy to use tech. For my mom, an empty nester wanting something fun to daily with past experience in the Audi brand, an A5 is pretty much the perfect car.
Tl;dr: The A5 is great, not sure why you aren't happy your dad is considering it, but consider your dad's needs and wants

Actually he's right. An Acura would be less fun that an understeering A5. He needs some RWD in his life.

C coupe is still the old model though. Supposedly they'll get a refresh in 2016 to follow the sedan.

honestly?
aside from the fact tht Toyota own lesxus, there isnt a fucking thing they share in common other then the fact they are built in japan.
(exception of tht big-ass body on frame SUV based on the sequoia. and the ES) the IS, LS, GS, NX dont share SHIT with toyotas

Who pissed in your Cheerios? What I'm saying is that they make fine luxury cars despite being similar to their plebeian counterparts. What makes Acura stand out is that they're really Euro Hondas rebadged and sold here.

people who dont know what their talking about.
like you and lexus, as an example.
![]() 03/27/2015 at 02:18 |

The IS is a bespoke Lexus, but the ES is a leathery Camry/Avalon. The LX is the Land Cruiser . The NX is a Rav4. The GX is a 4Runner. The RX is a Highlander. The GS is a Crown.
![]() 03/27/2015 at 02:27 |
|
RX is dead, to be slowly replaced by the NX
NX does share some frame portions with the RAV4. but suspension, engines, and everything else is lexus
LX: wasnt tht the one I mentioned? (google reveals yes. we get the land cruiser badged as a sequoia)
and i already talked about the ES
GS isnt a crown and was never a crown. it WAS once the aristo, but not for 2 generations now.
![]() 03/27/2015 at 02:46 |

The NX uses two variants of the Toyota AR engine, found in the RAV4.

if he's keen on an Audi , ask him if he has a public transport timetable handy.
as he's going to need it.

Between CLS new tl I've driven, rsx s that my family member owned I have never driven an Acura I've liked besides the Integra's. I've always thought they were boring because the steering is utter dog shit in nearly all of their cars and they have no feel driving. Relative to their competitor Audi I think most people consider an Acura a much more NON car persons car, a much more NON drivers car.
You are obviously still young, you will learn once you drive.

mMeh I whooped on a number on bmw's on our stock pig b7 s4 at thunderhill especially on exit of high speed turns. Really get tired of the understeer complaint thing I guess because I drive quickly enough I like to have grip during high speed cornering. The whole idea of being able to oversteer and have less push on corner entry and more corner entry speed is great but for being able to also drive backroads I still really enjoy awd. I do have a rwd 200hp car as well. Anyways I have driven an e92 m3 and it's faster all day long than the s4 is most aspects except maybe driving all out in the rain / snow. I don't feel the car is quicker because it's rwd solely, but it's lighter (which plays into being rwd I get that), and a much more aggressive engine among a more focused chassis, plus a truly insane gearbox. That being said there are some situations where the s4 can really hold it's own especially in high speed cornering and bumpy transitions. A lot of people bitch about awd because they are ham fisted. I Can appreciate the incredibly high corner exit speed. Don't hate!

if he wants an A5 who are you to say he's wrong? Not like you're paying for it.

Don't blame your dad. Blame Honda for making nothing but dull cars since the death of the RSX. And no, I don't think the TL was cool.

Audis were tarted up vw's, (I'm looking at you B5 Passat and A4) but the newer ones are a bit farther from their cousins than they used to be. Also, the A5 is such a handsome car, not that I'd choose it over a 2 series...but I'd definitely consider it.

I'm not saying he's wrong. He used to be a big Acura fan.

Right. Only rear wheel drive.
