Ford to show off Lincoln Continental Production Concept at NYC

Kinja'd!!!

GM Authority is claiming Tarted-Up-Ford will debut a production-esque model of the new MKS/Continental at the NYC AutoShow. This model will ride on the CD6 architecture which is rear wheel drive.
GM Authority being a GM news blog, thinks it's partially to rain on Cadillac's official debut of the magical CT6 powered by magic and made of helium.

But I'm not so sure, I don't think that's Ford's intention at all, I think they are still trying to trick people into believing Lincoln is relevant.

And the production version will be a Taurus renamed with a bunch of random letters.

Taurus TH - TryHard, in lieu of Acura already cornering the Toilet Log market with the TL

I hope it doesn't have the horrible grille design that is currently killing the aesthetic of all their current models. I get it - family design look. The look is awful and it is time to let it go.

If they create a bespoke RWD sedan (which that photo clearly shows) they will at long last begin climbing out of that pit of irrelevance. Ford indicated a while back that they were going to sink $5 billion into the brand and that is a lot more money than they'd need to continue their badge-engineering death spiral.

I have real hope in this development.

I believe that's their concept from over 10 years ago, lol actually I may have grabbed the Ford Interceptor (2007ish) concept as a picture, I was just following in Ford's footsteps for Lincoln I guess

Just to be clear, that picture has nothing to do with this car in question other than being a Ford-Lincoln concept from a decade ago. As stated this car will debut, whether in concept or production form, at the NY Autoshow, unless it otherwise leaks.

Still, you don't allowcate $5 billion to a badge engineering campaign. I stand by my optimism.

That is all fine and good...

but why not create a NEXT-BIG-THING, instead of a retrospective of 50 years ago, on a body style that has only tradition holding it up.

Sedans aren't gaining ground, they are losing it, because they have less cargo versatility, and no longer have a big edge on power and fuel efficiency.

The Lincoln Continental was an amazing car in the 1960s, because it was among the best NEW luxury cars then, not because it was looking backward to what was popular in 1910 era.

Retro can be fun... but having complete focus on the glory days of the long past means that there is no forward looking vision for today and the future.

That is true... but the name "continental" and the premise of a big RWD sedan tend to suggest a retro-mobile, like the image chosen to headline this thread.

One good reason is that people need to be reminded what made Lincoln great in the beginning. They need to have that image restored so that they will have an easier time forgetting the lackluster rebadging that had been destroying their reputation. My thoughts are that they need to drop a very limited (500 cars) production, very expensive stunner, but with the luxury of a Rolls, and the body of Lincoln brought forward to today. Like the initial Lexus, sell it for a loss to make sure the quality is there, but make sure it is a head turner that will get the flikrverse into a tizzy. then the collective conscious begins to associate the new awesome Lincoln with the old classic Lincoln, and once that happens they can move to the cutting edge with some stylistic cues to the older cars. It's tough to start on the edge of a razor, especially when most people have poor expectations.
