Ever wondered how fast a track is?

502.85 Mb/sec at the media centre.

Pegged speedtest like nobody's business. Next race you're watching data routed through my careful not-breaking of the fiber optics.

Yes, that's Jalopnic on the bandwidth wagon. Now if I'd only figured out a hidden slingbox I'd be set. And fired.

No, I didn't wire the thing. Blame Fox or ESPN. And they can thank me for not-breaking the fiber optics.

Diggity diggity.

My job, it is random, but certainly can be entertaining. Now own a racetrack-tested PC.

Those racks are a hot mess. Shoot me an I9, a round trip plane ticket, and a hotel room and I'll make that the sexiest rack there.

Only materials you need to supply are 5 different colors of Cat6e, I've got everything else.

(It's actually my job to wire racks, and a bunch get displayed).

Oh man you're right. Had been told to wait another half hour that room would have been immaculate but can't break what ain't mine. Er, my client. I can imagine what it looks like with all the media trucks patched in.

Yes, I contemplated a different dozen ways of putting a slingbox in there. Penalties outweigh the benefits. Road Atlanta, maybe.

You may notice a complete football field painted in the infield. This should be abused by Top Gear USA somehow. Get me Rutledge on the line.

These are a couple examples, I don't have enough parts in the current rack to really start wiring it up yet. These are specifically home automation and distributed home audio/video setups. Some commercial work (slowly getting into it, most jobs are residential that I work on). We're also working on improving organization and using better equipment for the racks (not that it's low quality, but not particularly user friendly). I was hired in January for this, and it's working out quite well, clients and the higher ups very much like my work, so that's what counts.

That's got a strong mid-90s flavor to it.

Nearly all the stuff at my race track is terminated LC. All the stuff that's located inside a building is LC for sure. I have a little bit of SC (easier to clean and harder to break for temporary stuff) for data out in the support race paddock and around the race track (IP cameras), and all the SMATV over fiber is on SC angle polished. The stuff that ESPN installed for their own use during X Games is all ST, because that's what they prefer. They paid for it, they can have ST :)

Nice. I'm always impressed when a random client's system is either color coordinated or uber neat or both. Best Buy, which I've driven in, has one of the neater setups. Locations vary.

youre at COTA on the IT team right? I'd love to see what you guys have, never really thought about how much infrastructure a racetrack would take... (I'm in IT too, consultant in RR)

I am indeed. If you wanted to take "the nerd tour" after MotoGP, that could be arranged.

oooh glad you reminded me, I need to get tickets. Are you pretty much working on every raceday? I know a couple guys who were volunteer track marshals but they stopped because on the good/busy races you're so busy working you don't really get to watch

Yeah, I work through every event. I get a little time to watch though.

However, I also watch the race at home later to actually see the race :)
