There's a couple from Michigan that are trying to visit every single county in the United States. They've hit all 3,108 counties in the lower 48 states, and need to finish Alaska and Hawaii. Their vehicle of choice is a 1999 Dodge Intrepid ES with the 3.2L V6. So far it's done 540,000 miles and they claim the motor is all-original.

Kinja'd!!!

What kind of dark Satanic rituals are they resorting to in order to keep that thing on the road? Is there a trail of vivisected goats and young children in their wake, their lifeblood being fed to the car to keep it operational? WE DEMAND ANSWERS!

Also, what kind of fucked-up people could put themselves through 470,000 miles inside the interior of a '99 Dodge Intrepid?!

The LH cars were decent road trip vehicles - spacious and very comfortable. The downsides are the oil sludge issue and the transmission issues and the electrical issues.

I suppose, if they've been very careful with maintenance, it isn't inconceivable that the engine would last that long. Doesn't mean they haven't had to do an extensive amount of other repairs, though.

It's extremely impressive if true. Surely it's had some invasive engine work in it's lifetime. What would things like valve guides and bearing look like after half a million miles.

If you divide 540,000 by 50 you'll get the real number of engines that it has gone through.

It's the 3.2L, not the 2.7L. With the 3.2L you only have to divide by 25.

The Intrepid's interior is actually a pretty nice place to be. The 3.2, while still anemic, is still better than the 2.7. 225hp was pretty good for the nineties and it wasn't as problem-ridden as the shitbox 2.7

The sludge problem was with the 2.7

I heard the 3.2s were actually pretty decent. Too bad it's still an Intrepid

I can believe this. Before I stupidly sold my Taurus SES, it had 308,000 miles on it and ran beautifully. It just had the bodywork of a car with 308,000 miles on it.

Stories of Chrysler/Dodge unreliability are greatly exaggerated. Owners are just terrible owners.

Really, the cars aren't that bad. Conversely, the alternatives also aren't that much better.

I had a 2001 with the same engine. I maintained it religiously and didn't hoon it at all. It still didn't prevent it from death by lower engine sump issues at 80,000 miles. It was a design flaw that was known. In the 180,000 miles I had mine, it went through 3 engines (thank god for warranties) There is no way that is original.

The 3.2 and newer 3.5 are good engines. The one in my Magnum has 192k and has no issues. Just remember to replace the timing belt and change the oil regularly. The valve seals have a tendency to leak a little oil, but otherwise they are a decent SOHC engine. The 42LE trans in that Intrepid on the other hand. . .no way the original one is still in there.

But like 10 transmissions, right?

An Intrepid transmission is usually good for 80k-120k before it breaks. They conspicuously don't state original transmission, so it's probably been replaced a few times.

You'll note they don't say original trans, just original motor.

Maybe it's the only one that Dodge built right.

... nope, couldn't say it with a straight face.

I can't imagine 470 miles in a '99 Intrepid, let alone 470,000.

My coworker must've just been lucky then. She inherited that gen Intrepid from her dad, and it puked a trans at 51k miles.
