I've told you about the shrinking number of manual transmissions, of V8, and naturally aspirated engines but how does that compare to the total number of performance cars? Before you is a list of every (of what I consider) performance car available today in the United States.

For the purposes of this list I'm not including any SUV/CUVs or any big luxury cars (ex. S class AMGs). Also missing are any small or specialty vehicles, if you can't find it on a car buying website it's not on here (ex. Morgans, Polstars). There's a lot of upcoming cars that I want to put on there that aren't out yet (Cayman GT4, manual F types, new CTS-V). Yes these are base prices and to get any options that you actually want you'll pay more, but in theory you can buy these cars for these prices.

Perhaps the cars of most interest around here are the "cheap" performance cars. In the $20-30k bracket there an interesting mix of hot hatches, sports compacts, and low end pony cars. Things to note: the Buick Verano isn't really a performance car but I thought it was interesting to include, Mitsubishi still sells the Ralliart (and for $30k!).

In the $30k bracket it's a high end sports compacts and the classic V8 pony cars.

Forty thousand dollar performance cars are exclusively German compacts and American muscle sedans. On a side note I don't really consider regular 3 Series-type cars "performance" cars, but thought some would missed them if I omitted them (particularly the Volvo).

In the fifties we start to see a cool mix of sports cars and high end muscle cars. For most of these I've just listed the hard top version (and ignored convertibles), but I've listed the Boxster separate from the Cayman for the power differences.

The "M3 fighter class" starts at the bottom of the $60k bracket with the new ATS-V and goes just beyond it with the RS5.

From $70k to $100k there's a lot of the "affordable" sports or supercars. The M5 class sports sedans straddle the $100k price point.

Kinja'd!!!

The $100k bracket starts with lightly optioned 911 and ends with high end performance cars, with plenty of grand tourers mixed in.

The $200+ thousand class is mostly Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

And last but the opposite of least there's the supercar class.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Finally for fun lets sort them by power to weigh, or rather weight to power.

As usual there's probably plenty of errors, missing cars, and contentious points, bring 'em on.

just browsed a little, but wanted to point out that the ATS with a V6 is not available with a manual. Very dumb, I know.

It seems the Mustang GT has the bast power/weight to price ration. (I pretty much just looked for the cheapest car with a power to weight ratio under 1/10. So my conclusion really has nothing to do with actual ratios.)

Interestingly the best $/(hp/weight) was the Genesis coupe(!) also the V6 Mustang narrowly beats out the V8 in that metric.

Good point, the transmission column is the sketchiest here because that info is tough to dig for.

neat. I've grown to really like the Genesis coupe. I've decided if I ever had one, I'd name it Jenny because I'am not creative.

They aren't the same car though.

It looks like the Z06 comes in right at the point of diminishing returns. If you want 10% more performance without mods, you have to buy an F12 Berlinetta, which costs 1 Z06 x 4. 2x performance of the Z06 in one stock car requires a Z06 x17; that's more than enough money to start a ten-car Z06 taxi service. Hmm...

Anyone wanna seed fund my Gearhead centric Uber competitor startup?

There's no Corvette in here but there's a Golf, WTF?

I assume it's Road and Tracks "new for '15" comparison. The Stingray was old new and they probably couldn't get their hands on a ZO6 yet.

The M3 fighter class with no M3?

Love these lists, by the way! Keep it up, they're very interesting.

Ugh, you know in the old days BMW would make an M3 and it would be both a sedan and a coupe. Now they've gone and made two models out of the same car. Thanks.

Yeah, that is very BMW of them to do. Still don't understand the logic there.
