A while ago some Opponaut whose name I cannot recall came up with a great idea. We all want Carfax reports; sometimes for fun, sometimes for serious purchases. Unlimited reports cost $54.99. What if we crowdsourced the money? Hell it would take 55 of us to only donate $1. Id gladly give $5, maybe even $10. So, what do say? Do we have anyone here who is familiar with a crowdsourcing site and people willing to donate? Let's do this Oppo!

I actually had this idea not too long ago but forgot about it. I'm good for $10.

It very well could've been you then! I mean enough people ask so it would make sense to do something like this!

I would check the terms of use before doing this.

How long is it unlimited for? I would definitely contribute a couple of dollars. Even if I only use it once, it is cheaper this way for sure.

Nah it wasn't me, I forgot to post about it.
But yeah I'll give $10 and I already have access through work, it's just a pain in the dick because I have to have a coworker run them. Which reminds me....

Its 60 day increments so.. its not the best but its not the worst thing either

I read through it already and saw absolutely nothing close to an issue with doing this. If we keep it's login access to only one or two people we'd be no different than say a dealer running these reports on potential cars to buy. They sell unlimited reports for a reason...

Not true, the agreement states something to he nature of 'individual use only' and 'reports may not be distributed.' This has been done a number of times on forums I'm on and they always get caught and canceled.

FYI - I recently bought the unlimited CARFAX thing when I was looking for a new truck.
It's unlimited CARFAX reports WHEN RUNNING LICENSE PLATES. I still only got 5 VIN lookups even though I purchased the unlimited reports.

So then what do the dealers do? because that may be the plan I need to look into

Oh... damn they dont make that clear at all
thanks for the heads up... I wish I knew that sooner

It's a totally separate program. I'm not sure how it works since I'm not/don't work for a dealer, but the website is here: http://www.carfaxfordealers.com/

Oh, quick search on dealer forums it looks like it's about 2 grand a month.

See attached confirmation - they don't tell you about the license plate thing until AFTER you bought it...

Wow thats really messed up honestly. False advertising.
How does the plate thing work? Like Florida 732 QQD (was my old plate) gets entered?
![]() 03/11/2015 at 10:38 |

So if I gave you a plate, what would you get back? Because it isn't the Vin...

Basically, you get the same thing you would have gotten by searching by VIN. They just limit VINs, but not plates.
I've since let it expire, so I can't show you what it looks like, but it's the same.
The big drawback is that searching dealer vehicles, which don't have plates anymore, require the VINs, so either you have to use up one of your 5, or hope the dealer provides the CARFAX for you.

Thats why I was kinda hoping you did still have it since I sold the car that plate belonged to... so much of my Craigslist hunts are on cars no longer registered. So this wouldnt work well for me.
thanks for the heads up and I hope you got some money back or something because that is bull

There is a website that was put together and set up so everyone could run the Carfax report for free, it was at https://www.lemonchecks.com
And even at the least you can get a basic free vin check and vehicle history!
