Alright Oppo, so this morning my wife found someone had broken a key off in her driver-side doorlock. There are 3 scenarios I can see for this: Someone was trying to steal her car/things inside her car; someone was being a dick and just breaking a spare key off in her door lock; or someone was drunk/asleep and tried to open the wrong car. Either way I want to find out what car this could belong to. She has a 2001 subaru and this key does not match subaru keys from what research I have done - there isn't even another Subaru in our parking lot let alone one from that time period. Even if I don't find the person whose key this is, I would like to know so I can keep an eye out for more shenanigans.
Thanks!
p.s.: pliers are the best way to get broken keys out of door locks...as long as some of it is sticking out...
EDIT: Sorry guys but it seems there are too many keys with this general key profile (off-center ridge with the top edge being trimmed down) so who knows if it I will find out...

I have a tool made specifically for removing broken keys that aren't outwardly visible. My username isn't just a pun!

Looks exactly like the cheap-ass Toyota blanks they give you at the dealership (i know cause when mine broke it looked just like that.

Looks like maybe a Saturn/GM key. Could tell for sure if you had a head on shot.

Could be anything. Looks a bit like my Dodge keys (I'd bet that it's from an older Dodge with a black, grey or glow key). The newer Dodge keys break inside the fob, so you wouldn't see the cut section break like that without a lot of persuasion from a newer key.
Probably someone being a dick, if I'm going to be honest. Keys don't break all that easily, it needs repeated forcing for it to break off inside a lock. They probably stuck it in, and instead of turning it, they just bent the end of the key back and forth until it broke off (wont take that long).

Yeah from everyone's responses seems like it could be from anything. I was hoping they left the top of the fob too but I couldn't find it, I'll go look again after work...
And I agree with your thoughts on the motivation behind it, but we don't really know anyone in our neighborhood who would be pissed at her...let's hope it stops at this.

Yeah it seems the basic shape is quite similar to a lot of keys. The off-center groove and the thinner bit on the top edge of the key.... not sure I'll be able to figure where it goes to...

could be a simple case of mistaken vehicle. Relatively harmless stuff like this I do my best to ignore, not worth the trouble. If they keyed the car or something that actually caused damage, thats a different story.

Could be...but there's no other car similar to hers in the lot...hence me thinking they might have been tired or drunk or both. There wasn't any other damage...so it's peculiar.
