I'm doing eco driving all this week. Keeping the revs low, freeway speeds at 65 (speed limit is now 70) and carrying nothing but me in the car. More on this later.

What? Are you on drugs?

Sir, do you know how fast you were going?
I can explain, you see I'm on an eco drive and...
Step out of the car sir.

I tried this once, but then I woke up from that horrible nightmare

Here's to hoping you can eek out 13 MPG.

fingers crossed! Not to give away too much, but I'm hoping it doesn't change at all.

I try it just about every time I fill the tank. And then about a 16th in, I say f*ck this...

The good news is that because its still a land cruiser, going through 25.4 gallons in a week should still be pretty easy. So it will be a short lived nightmare.

my car gets garbage gas mileage weather or not I drive like an ass, so I drive like an ass. no point in going insane and still getting bad gas mileage.

Eco driving sucks, that is all.

I always start out my tank of gas saying "keep the revs below 3k" and then that all goes to hell when I decide that I would rather hear the motor at 6k. Due to the lack of decisiveness I end up sometimes getting 18 mpg for the tank and other times with 31.

I tried keeping the 4Runner under 3k for a week once. My average went up from mid-12's to nearly 13! It was not worth being a hazard to traffic.

That's what I'm expecting, but its for Science!

Luckily for you, you at least make a chunk of your torque at or below 3k.
![]() 03/09/2015 at 13:45 |

all of it, actually...well torque peak is 3100 but yeah.

I've done that a couple of times in my Miata, running through whole tanks of gas in an eco style vs. my normal, rather less reserved style... The result was that short shifting, keeping revs under 2k and even momentum-conserving unsafe (non-)braking practices took me from my normal 27 MPG to an "eco" 28.5 MPG.

Just got off the phone with your best friends. If you really want to cut your fuel consumption, they agreed to lend you their car.

I got it because we tow with the Tacoma, so Transmission Temp is important.. but then I totally got sucked into watching all the cool numbers; Throttle position, A/F ratio, Intake Air Temp, Coolant Temp, Engine Load... you get 4 at a time so eventually I settled on Coolant temp/ Transmission temp/ avg daily mileage/ instant mileage... if I can keep my instant mileage under my daily avg I'm happy.
Ended up with another for the Forester - but the Subie doesn't have as many available gauges.. it stays on Coolant temp/ Engine Load/ avg daily mileage/ instant mileage.
