Kinja'd!!!

So.... I've seen it personally a couple of times before... but a friend posted a couple of pics to facebook that I thought I'd share.... But what happens is that we get the first snowstorm at the beginning of winter, and since 4-wheel drives can conquer *anything* in their path, a number of folks head up into the mountains to play in the snow with their trucks... Obviously there's no problem with that... until a few of them get stuck, but figure they can return tomorrow to dig the truck out... And then it snows three feet that night... and then another foot two days later.... and then lo and behold, Winter's here! And your truck is STILL in the mountains....

I remember cross-country skiing up a forest service road outside Durango one year after the first storm of the season... I came across another skier coming down and he warned me about what I was going to soon see.. Another mile up the road (with about a 1-2 ft base of snow on it) I came across two people who had been camping in the national forest when the storm hit... They were digging the road out to try to get their chevy sedan back to civilization.... When I came across them, they'd made it a couple of hundred yards (using lunch trays as shovels, I seem to recall)... I was pretty impressed with the amount of work they were doing... But they still had about 2 miles to go before plowed roads..... But I didn't see their car the next time I was up there so I assume they eventually made it out; having learned a lesson I'm sure they'll never forget.

Unfortunately, (or fortunately for humor's sake!) not everyone's as committed as those two. But hey, the marmots will thank the others for all the delicious rubber parts they're going to snack on during the long, cold winter!

Then there's antigravity Stuck, where you can't keep the damn wheels on the ground:

I couldn't just abandon a vehicle like that in the mountains. Which is why I wouldn't go out trying that kind of stuff without serious amounts of recovery gear.

Wolf Creek got 5 FEET of snow this past weekend, and I imagine there's plenty of people wrestling with a similar possibility.

These pics were taken in La Plata Canyon, a little mountain range about 15 miles west of Durango, Colorado

Worst, if somebody came back and tried to get free after getting *extra* stuck in a drift from additional fall, they run the risk of monoxiding themselves, almost as much as getting stuck in the mud. I'm no medical expert, but a dangerous dose is probably lower when combined with very cold weather due to decreased cell function. Frostbite + hypoxia can't be a good combination.

Yeah, Wolf Creek's been getting shmucked the past couple of weeks... but this sort of thing doesn't happen once the winter's started... roads that get plowed, get plowed. But if you're 10 miles up in the national forest (that isn't maintained) and you get hit with a foot or two of snow... that's when people don't see their cars for 5 months.......

I could almost understand getting the suburban stuck. Not the Jeep though. This could have been avoided had he invested in a winch.

Great post!

At least the Jeep's (or at least seems to be) on the side of the road. Hope next time they will be better equipped if they want to do more shenanigans in the snow!

I've done stupid crap like that, I never considered how badly it could have gone. I was watching something about Alaska and their tidal patterns. Certain times of the year having much higher tides allows much larger boats to access areas that they normally can't, but the window is only a few days, and missing the window means leaving your boat beached for 6 months until the exceptionally high tide returns.
