The SCG 003 is a no-frills, modular supercar which utilizes a carbon fiber chassis, an HPD-derived 3.5L twin-turbo V6, and bespoke DOT taillights which cost as much as a F430. But you already !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! all of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Here are six things you didn't know about James Glickenhaus's latest brainchild.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
1. Legal road-going cars require mirrors - plain and simple. The problem with automotive mirrors is that they are usually wildly aerodynamically inefficient. The SCG 003's solution? According to a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! tour led by James, SCG designed the mirrors first and foremost to "trim out the wake turbulence of the wing." Cameras placed in the mirrors help serve the conventional function of the mirrors sending video to screens on each side of the steering wheel.
2. While the latest supercars' gauge clusters are hell-bent on providing drivers with every last detail about the cars, the 003's is not. James attempted to build a sort of "jet fighter smart dash" which focuses on telling the driver only what he/she needs to know - current gear, speed, and when to shift. If there is an issue with oil pressure, temperature, or the like, it will alert the driver. If not, there's no reason to know.
3.
Perhaps my favorite feature, the 003 contains one large air vent on the dash. According to James, "for a bit of nostalgia, that is an original air vent that was used in the Ferrari P4." Since James owns two of four P4s, he simply removed one of his, reverse engineered it, and 3-D printed it so that it is a perfect duplicate.
4. There are three gauges next to the fuel fill. The top gauge indicates fuel levels. This is especially useful in race trim as it reduces the risk of fuel spills. The middle gauge indicates oil levels. The bottom gauge indicates what position you are in a race because racecar.
5.
In race trim, the 003 sports 18" wheels at all four corners. In street trim, it sports 19" front and 20" rear wheels. However, the overall dimensions of the track wheels and tires and road wheels and tires are exactly the same. This means that a street trim car can swap to the sticky race wheels and tires at the track and still enjoy perfect handling characteristics.
6. It's not uncommon for performance cars to include a fire extinguisher with purchase. What about a leaf blower? Every race trim 003 sold comes with an "in pit blower." Fans are included with purchase of road cars. NOTE: SCG employee Sal not included.

i'm wondering about the pedestrian safety requirements. did the nose of this car have to pass all US regulations or was it allowed some small-manufacturer leeway?
i can imagine that carbon fiber racey nose leaving a mark on my knees if we ever were to meet in a crosswalk.
[disclaimer: i have no idea what such regulations may be for large or small manufacturers]

![]() 03/12/2015 at 12:48 |

1) There is no US regulation for pedestrian safety. That is entirely a European standard.
2) Even if there were, a car manufactured in a limited quality like this can petition NHTSA to be exempt from crash test regulations, as crashing 20 cars so you can sell 5 would be a little ridiculous. Most of the time petitioning works, but only for a limited time. This is how Lotus sold cars that didn't meet safety regulations for a while (they stopped when their petition time ran out).

Why doesn't *EVERY* car come with fuel and fluid level gauges by the filler cap? This is a great idea for most everyone who never pops the hood on their car... Or a light that reads, "Get someone at the gas station to help you top-up your oil before you blow an apex seal"..

hey... thanks for the response! and i'll assume by your name that you do know what youre talking about.
So US safety regulations are all focused on the driver/passenger and drivers/passengers of other cars?
i suppose that makes sense, since it is our duty to ensure people are driving instead of walking, to keep those oil companies in business and the pharmaceutical companies churning out diabetes drugs.

This car takes everything I loved about the Caparo T1 and hated about the Bugatti Veyron and takes it a step further. Vestigial mirrors, aero kit a la LMP car, small twin turbo for power. Driver's seat/cockpit designed for situational awareness. Everything made out of carbon fiber as God and nature intended. The only thing that I might expect in the next iteration is some really crazy active aero.
![]() 03/12/2015 at 12:55 |
|
Not likely, This would likely be registered as a kit or custom built car. In which case your requirements are to the bare minimum. Headlights, Taillights, Signals, Mirrors. DOT really only steps in on mass produced cars.
![]() 03/12/2015 at 12:56 |

The only way one can be road registered in the US is under the Homebuild laws of various US states.

![]() 03/12/2015 at 13:02 |

I have often wondered how feasible it would be to replace my side mirrors with tiny cameras, linked to small display screens in the 10 and 2 positions above my steering wheel. Minimal head turns to see traffic on either side. Plus, if my wife, a full 12" shorter than me, gets in, there is no need to adjust those mirrors, the camera are already aimed for optimal view. Automatic glare reduction can be worked into the software, so a huge truck, or even the sun, won't blind you. Get a wide enough range in the camera, and you increase visibility at night, too. And all while creating a vehicle with smoother lines, and a reduction in drag. Sure, in my MINI, I'm going to guess that the amount of drag caused by side mirrors is quite minimal, and the cost to go the camera route would be way over the top of any fuel savings I might gain, but hey, because technology?

Having driven exotic cars for over 40 years I've come to learn a thing or two about that.
Unlike my 275GTB this defogger works.
Unlike my 308GTB you can turn on the heat/ac without contorting your arm.
Unlike my TR the seatbelts are usable.
Etc., Etc., Etc.

Thanks! I'm aware of the prohibition against active aero, and understand the impetus for not equiping the SCG003, I was referring more to the status of the SCG003 as being the "ultimate" road going car (as perceived by the public).
Also, I think you, of all people, should not have comments greyed out!

I believe the NHTSA crash testing only needs like 3 cars. However this made a big deal for Pagani IIRC because each car was like $1 mil and they couldn't afford to destroy 3 of them. I'd imagine the SCG falls into that category as well.
This is just from what I remember, I could be wrong.

Basically our idea is a car you can drive to a race, easily convert in the pit, race a real race, reconvert and drive home.
This is something I'm actually going to try to do with mine. Drive her to the Nurburgring in road trim. Convert her to full race. (Wing etc.) Race the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, reconvert her, and drive her to the Concours at Villa d'Este the weekend following the 24.

![]() 03/12/2015 at 13:32 |

James may chime in (and I hope he does) but I don't believe so. The 003 was built to be just as effective as a street car as a race car. Blowers are standard practice with track/race cars and I believe that is why they are included.

James, I live in Westchester NY and have had the rare pleasure of seeing your P4/5 on 684. Also I've seen you a few times in your 8C Alfa. I am a huge fan and love what you're doing! May I ask why you went with a HPD derived V6 over say any other manufacture motor? At the risk of sounding as uninformed as I am, I thought a Ford racing or GM LS motor would have been a no brainer. Why not Ferrari derived? All the best!

What JG meant to say was "fuck you, pay me"
![]() 03/12/2015 at 13:40 |
|
No. Remember that on a race track you get everything COOKING HOT.
On the road if you rarely go from flat out to bumper to bumper but if you did cooling fans which all road versions will have will take care of traffic.
That said letting a turbo car idle for a while to cool down is always a good idea before shutting it off but at The Ring because the pits are so busy for safety you have to shut down without idle cool down so aux pit cooling is needed. That's why we also have two separate starter motors. Hot starting a race motor is a bitch and by the end of a 24 your starter motor is often cooked so we fit 2.

I like just about everything this car has going on - even the sort of divisive "ugly Enzo" exterior aesthetic which seems very form following function. I even like the interior choices...including the one vent.
What I do not like? The vent appearing to be made out of Big Gulp white plastic! I'm not saying it needs to be carbon fiber etc. And I'm not saying that it's appropriate for this car to try to ape the bejewelled-aluminum interior design of a Pagani....but I do think some sort of metal would be appropriate for this vent from an aesthetic angle. Aluminum, steel, titanium, or even something weird like Copper plated.

How???
![]() 03/12/2015 at 13:51 |

This is a very good race motor with huge torque which is what you need to push a very high downforce car through the air.
We are developing road motors and assuming one can pay fit a TTV8 or a TTW12 as well as our TTV6. As road version will weigh about 1100kg personally I think our TTV6 with about 650HP and 750 nm of torque will be nice but if you want 1500hp we can do that for you. Do remember that the life span of a 1500hp motor is about that of Jimi Hendrix (relatively).
![]() 03/12/2015 at 13:54 |

I really like the overall design but the street wheel choice disturbs me as I really don't like them. Probably more a matter of tastes though!
