I've been taking some prescription Clarinex D for the last week that I had in the fridge.

I looked closer at the bottle this morning. The prescription was filled in March of 2007.

They've still been working like a charm. Should I be concerned though?

This is very important: how do the colors taste?

It's fine. Expiration dates on most PO drugs are kind of bullshit. Expiration is based upon the length of time that the company can guarantee at least 90% efficacy. Testing is stupid expensive, so in most cases, they just put on the length of time that they tested it out to.

Muahahahaha this is totally me right now too! I'm sick and have been trying everything to stop coughing, get my voice back, and enjoy some sleep.

That's when I found some Nyquil last night. It expired well over a year ago.

I took a chug, and was out no more than 10 minutes later. :D

4th year pharmacy student here. Many drugs have therapeutic benefits long after their "expiration" date but they do tend to lose some of their potency. As for clarinex d there really isn't anything that its going to break down into that's going to hurt you but with that said there's no way to be sure that you're receiving the proper dose every time you're taking it. If you can get a new prescription or pick up some OTCs I'd go that route but there really isn't too much of a risk. Now if this were a maintenance drug for a chronic condition I'd say avoid it and get a new script.

Blueberry. I hate blueberry. Only one man would dare make my hallucinations taste like blueberry: LONESTAR

I work in a company that (among other things) supplies humidity/temp control chambers and rooms to do said testing. Can confirm stupid expense.

Over time the desloratadine (the active ingredient in Clarinex) can undergo a hydro–halogenation reaction in the presence of atmospheric moisture. If this occurs it will produce a racemic mixture of ( S , S )-2-methylamino-1-phenylpropan-1-ol, as well as a potassium nitrate precipitant. If you've unknowingly ingested these, you may experience joint pain or a strong updog taste in your mouth. If the latter occurs, call your doctor immediately.

Is updog a misspelling of something? Otherwise, please describe it.

Allergy sufferer here. I got a large capacity (but near-silent) HEPA air purifier for my house. It has helped immensely.

This was for post-nasal drip management for a sinus infection long ago.

Haha I'm sorry. The pharmacy student commenter seemed like he knew what he was talking about though!

I've had that post-nasal drip before. Not fun. Gave me a crazy bad sore throat for almost a week.

You're right about the breakdown but it's kind of like a perfect storm. Assuming he left it sealed in the container in the fridge there wouldn't be enough moisture to break down a significant amount of drug to have to worry. If it had been left out in the open and not sealed then I would be a little more hesitant but obviously if you're not feeling well and it correlates to taking the drug then seek medical attention. I should've said that but to us in the field it's kind of like a given so I didn't think to include it

Sure thing, obviously I'm not certified so don't take my word as religion and if you start to feel something that doesn't seem right get some medical attention but as long as the clarinex has been sealed and in the fridge I wouldn't worry to much. Thanks and good luck to you too!

Ha I'm just glad I was able to pull enough jargon out of my ass from my one semester of O Chem that it sounded halfway legit. OP still didn't fall for the joke though : /
