I'm driving Mrs. Ontop's Mazda 6 today and was looking at the speedometer. I noticed that it tops out at 160. I've never done that in the car, or anything close to it, but judging from my experience with the car, I actually think it could make it all the way up there under the right conditions. So my question to you, is, have you ever hit your car's top speed? What was it like?
Alternatively, do you think the top speed listed is just an exercise in wishful thinking on your car?

Most cars' speedometers go to a higher speed than the car is capable of achieving. It's a subtle way the car companies make you think the car is fast.

I haven't hit it on track but a stock NB Miata with the 5-speed will top out right at 130 mph due to gearing and redline rather than aerodynamics.

Maxxed out my stepdad's 535d a few years ago. It still had the governor that limited it to 250kph (155mph). Did the same with my Mazdas and the Honda, with the Honda I even verified it via GPS (205k/126m). So far the listed top speeds have been pretty accurate.

I buried the needle on my old scooter once - had it bouncing past the 45mph mark. 49cc of fury.

Limited to 128 MPH, I might have reached such speed going to the beach house. It was quite composed.

The top speed of an early 80s VW Caddy/Rabbit Pickup with a diesel and 200k+ miles is 83mph when moderately downhill. The Landie tops out, what, maybe 72? My speedo is not the most accurate. Benz - highly variable, and has been trending downhill.

Top speed in my xTerra was 95. You could do 94 all day, but the minute you hit 95 it would force you back down to around 87mph. The first time I hit the limiter I honestly though my car was about to explode because it make a nice "bump, bump, bump" sound as it slows you down.
Never hit the top speed in the 2002, but I've been within 10mph, and I have no idea what the top speed on my Jeep is. The speedo goes up to 100, but I've had it in the mid 90s. Maybe the top speed is actually 100? I've never seen a car where your speedo's highest number is actually your top speed though. Maybe they just assume no one is dumb enough to do over 90 in a soft top box on wheels.
I've been within 20-25mph of the top speed in my uncle's F430 though. That's as close as I will ever get, and likely as fast as I will ever drive.

I've hit the top speed of only one of the vehicles I have ever owned, 100mph on a Ninja 250.
I have gotten close in others (but was still slowly accelerating when I backed off)
135mph (according to the speed) on my FZ6, was scary as shit
110mph in my moms 2000ish corolla (this surprised me, didn't think I'd be able to get much past 100 but it was still accelerating)
I was younger and dumber when I did all this, but at least did them on long straight deserted roads so only put myself at risk

Governed at 100mph. Hits it without trying. Really has me curious about what it'll actually do—given the rate it's accelerating at when it hits the limiter, I'd say it's good for 140, give or take a little.*
*All claims herein are hypothetical, of course.

The speedo on the track car goes to 160, but it's limited to like 105 or something like that from the factory.
...That being said, I've seen as high as 140 at at the track, because it's been tuned and removed the limiter.

Top speed of the 'Vette is probably right around 155 so, no, I haven't hit it. Highest I've gone was 105. I really don't have a good space to go fast.

I've hit the limiter in my old '92 Ranger a few times - 169 km/h (105 mph).

Speedo goes up to 200km/h. I reached about 185 on the speedo which is like 170 on GPS.
Driving at that speed is not really a problem as long as there is no wind. And with 64hp you need quite a run up to reach it.

My 1995 Mercury Tracer was drag limited to 105mph, despite the speedometer going to 120. Though after removing the air box, zip-tying the filter to the lid, and rotating it 90 degrees for a ram air effect, I got it up to 108. These experiments took place at an undisclosed test location.
On the front straight at Lime Rock Park, my 1990 Miata prepped to stock class autocross standards (plus the required roll bar and harnesses), with an instructor friend at the wheel and the top down, drafted a Viper up to 112 - and GOT A POINT-BY! But when he pulled out to pass it was like hitting a wall of air - even though the Viper lifted, he couldn't get by.
In contrast, I have in-car video somewhere of myself - not as good a driver as my instructor friend - touching 115 in the same place with the top up and drafting no one. I think that speedometer went to 140, but there was no way it could go that fast without a lot of modification, I don't think.

My E34's speedo goes to 160 as well. Reading online, it says it's drag-limited at around 145.

I think there's very few cars where I haven't hit the top speed. Generally, it involved a lot of vibrating and drastic MPG drop. The only cars I've felt have been stable at top speed was a Jaguar XKR... until I ran out of gas.

Right, because an indicated 145 on the front of the Daytona trioval in the ancient S4 biturbo is an exercise not in "Will it go that fast?" but rather "Dare you drive it that fast?"
Yes, I have.

But have you driven the Landie at 72? I seem to recall that after removal of the thermostat (and on a questionable water pump), it did just fine at about 62.
Probably needed a towable refinery to keep it fed at that speed, but still...

I max out the Landys all the time, fuel economy (what?) be damned. 135mph combined top speed. You've never felt a crosswind unless you've driven an unladen Defender at full chat.

Yes, after 16 mph it feels like a tunnel and your lane feels a whole lot skinnier. My speedo goes up to 20, but it has a soft speedlimiter and I've seen 17.6 as the highest. I don't recommend near those speeds on roads where other people are on them. The reaction time is nonexistent.

1992 Alfa Romeo 164-S: 158mph - 160mph speedo
1997 BMW F-650: 108mph - 115mph speedo
1989 Mazda Protege LX: 112mph (electronically limited) - 140mph speedo
1993 Mazda B2600 2x4 PU: 100ish (not sure if it really runs out of steam here, or if it's a very soft limiter) - 110 mph speedo
1989 Audi 100 Quattro: 130mph (electronically limited) - 160mph speedo
1965 Styer Puch (Sears) 250 GS: approx 70-ish terrifying MPH. - 90mph speedo

I've gotten close in the RX8, but it still had a bit more in it for sure(and according to the forums it should've had more in it). It was 143 on flat ground, hits that in 5th gear, which is funny because it doesn't have the torque to go any faster in 6th. The speedo is digital only, so I guess it's max is 199?
On a recent trip one of my friends bet me $20 I couldn't get the LOLvo over 100 with all 4 of us plus luggage, turns out he was right.

it says 140... it won't go there, in 5th gear at ~8000 rpm I was over 120... but certainly not using that whole dial
but apparently, that's partially because speedometres suck. math says that with the engine spinning at that speed and with the transmission ratio of 5th and stock sized wheels and tyres it should hit 152mph

When I was young and stupid (as opposed to old and stupid), I decided to max out my Pontiac Grand Prix GT. It was late at night, long straight road, in farm country. I could probably have still hit a deer or stray cow or something, but no people were around. It rocked up to almost 100MPH, then physics kicked in and it achingly crawled towards the 120MPH mark (end of the speedo). At 115MPH shit got weird, like the engine stopped making noise, the RPMs fell way off, and I flipped. Figured I'd blown the damn thing up. Nope, severe ignition cut for the electronic limiter at 115.
A few years later, same place and situation as above, in my lightly modded WRX, burried the needle. The little marks on the speedo stopped at 140MPH, but the needle went a few degrees past that.
A couple years after that I maxed my CBR1000RR, couldn't see the speedo because I was busy holding on, but when I finally had enough and let off the throttle, I stole a quick glance up and saw it coasting down through 183MPH. After that experience I've given up on trying to max out vehicles until I get something even faster (and have access to a better testing site, i.e. a track).

My speedo tops out at 160, but....
And that was in a Standing mile. From a 60 roll, I've registered 186 on the GPS. Actually I back off it at 186 because my passenger was about to have a heart attack. I think 200 is doable with enough road.

I once drove a rented 1L 4cyl VW Polo (45hp) in Germany on a vacation. I got it up to 172km/h down a hill with the gas pedal solidly to the floor.. The car's top speed according to the owners manual was 145km/h.
It felt fast and the engine sounded like it was getting close to the rev limit. In terms of handling, it felt stable.
Then the hill ended and a curve came and I had to slow down a little. I only had to ease off the gas this much: ][
and my speed eased back to around 150km/h.
Then after the curve, throttle back to the floor and I was able to maintain 150-160km/h.
When stopping for a break, I had to get something out of our luggage in the truck. I noticed the left side of the trunk and our luggage on that side that (near the exhaust pipe) felt noticeably warmer.
That's the only time that I not only hit a car's official top speed, but exceeded it by a good measure.

The highest I have seen is 167 mph indicated on my bike, a ZX-10. Recorded at a trackday @ NCBIKE. Didn't really had time to acknowledge the feeling. The scariest part is how effortlessly it got there.
I've hit 100 - 110 mph in several cars on the road. Seemed fine.

Yep. 1985 Iroc Z. Had it buried and the cop that pulled me over said he paced me at 105.
He wrote the ticket for 75 in a 55 since I was using my blinkers very well.
I also took a 1990 300zx NA up to 145 before I had to let off the throttle.

I've only done about 120 in the 525i (5MT E34 M20) on the way back from Vegas and it was in its groove, smooth as silk. A friend took the same car out to some deserted roads in the middle of Nevada and took it up to 148 according to the GPS. Not bad for a car that the factory says will only do 135. Perhaps credit is owed to Dinan for the chip and lowered suspension.

I'm serious. In a car, I'm pretty adventurous, but on a bike I prefer to keep it to surface streets. I just can't do it. Maybe if I lived in a less crowded area the highway would hold a little more allure for my biking dreams.

My cars speedometer goes to 160. I have no doubt it could exceed that being a 12 Mustang GT. I have never attempted that however, maybe I've done 120 on an entrance ramp like it was nothing. I've done over 150 in a CTSV on a track. And I've been 143 as a passenger with my wife driving her G8 GT.

138 MPH in the GLi before I started using the "slow" pedal. I ran out of room on the empty, closed road I was using, but it would have gone on to 140+ for sure if I had the space.
(The road that was being used was about 2.2 miles and almost completely straight. It was leading up to a closed bridge that was under repairs, and had many signs saying "CLOSED ROAD AHEAD, and BRIDGE OUT on the side of it!)
